Do you still defrag your hard disk? I remember our previous computer which was a Pentium 4 with a hard disk of less than 500 GB. We were advised to defrag it for a faster operation. Defragging is the removal of blank fragments so files on the hard disk would be physically contiguous. But the process of defragging takes many hours that's why it is better to defrag the hard disk at night. However, with our present computer which is also an old one but with a hard disk of 500 GB for the system disk, we never had defragged it even once. Is defragging an obsolete process?
I have all of my systems set up for regular maintenance, though I take the time to defrag - on top of the other actions - once every three months, so four times a year, not only to speed things up a little but to check for and correct any errors or faulty sectors that from time to time pop up.
