When a member of your forum votes for another forum and comes and announces that he voted for another forum on your own, is that a betrayal?

Honestly, I have never had this happen, but I seriously don't think I would be overly offended though, simply because I have never been in this for competition. This is just a HOBBY...something to do to kill some time. So if someone came on to my site and said, I voted for Wober instead of you guys in the Forum of the Month...I honestly wouldn't be offended. Because again, this has never been about competition. I didn't get into this to beat anybody at who has the best forum than who, and when I do partake in FTOM's, which is rarely, it's merely just a "just because" kind of thing. Not because I want to win, but because the overall experience sounds interesting.

But some people consider it as much more than just a Hobby, Like a serious business may be? Because not everyone kills time with creating a specific niche of a forum, and i really can't understand how isn't this offending to you.

No member is obligated to vote for you simply because they joined. I would be concerned as to why they voted for them over you as it obviously means you are not satisfying their needs hence why they went for someone else.

The reason it doesn't offend that person is because they are only in this to entertain themselves and to make friends. No competition is going to bother them because they don't care as to who wins or doesn't win.

I would not see it as a betrayal myself.

I am a member of many forums, and if two of these forums were to have a Site Battle, I would vote for the one which I thought was the better forum. I would still be active on both forums however, so I am not really doing anything against the site I did not vote for.

Just the same, I would not be offended if this happened on my site. Everyone has the right to vote for any forum, as others have already said above.

I have nothing against the freedom of choosing or speaking, also never happened to me before.
I'm just asking.

One thing of note that people often forget:

There is no democracy on a forum.

On topic:

It is a simple gesture that indicates a member prefers website A over B. But to me it asking for trouble. Why do we need to know you voted for the other site on our own forum? What business is that to us? Just keep it to yourself.

That is the same like posting a good bye topic on A cause you like it more on B thus say on the good bye topic:

Good bye I'm leaving here and spent more time on forum B.

What good can come of that? Nothing. Its a pointless topic which is also what I think of saying you voted for an other site and saying it on the site you didn't vote for.

I don't think it'd be a betrayal, I would however find it a bit rude if they openly announced they voted for another forum on yours... (Even ruder if they named and posted the link too since then it'd fall under advertising.)
But even then I'd be more curious why they voted for another site. What does it have that my site doesn't? How could I improve my site?

Though I agree with Bluezone777 and AndroidOS, no one is ever obligated to vote for your site just because they are a member. And if they're a member of both sites in question, wouldn't either site they picked be a "betrayal" to someone? Which would mean they couldn't vote for either site if they wanted not to "betray" either site. (Though given how many members are part of multiple sites, it'd be incredibly low voting rates if members who were part of multiple sites didn't vote...)

About the only thing I can say is that if you don't want people to vote "against" (I say against loosely because there may be nothing against your site, it could be great... just that other site is even greater in some regard) you then don't enter your site for forum battles or competitions directly against other forums.

Actually, that is exactly why I'm in this. I don't care about having an seriously active forum like FP. I'm not in this to become well known or famous among other Webmasters. This has been, and always will be, just something to do to kill time. Also, the only other reason I'm doing this is because I have been on some fairly strict general discussion forums in my time and I wanted something that was not as strict. But the first part of my post is why I'm doing this.

This is pretty much my view too. I submitted my fairly new forum and do it as a hobby. I'm not trying to compete or even say I'm better than most anime forums. (even though, in a behavioral sense it is 'better')

I've never ever done FOTM or SOTM contests until just now on FP. I don't care if I do or don't win the contest - as it is just that - a contest.

It depends, If they where recently staff then I would but A normal user. No This will say that your site needs improvments which gives A chance to improve it. As @Smitty said its just A hobby which means there's lots of time for improving.
Some hobbies can turn into businesses if you want it to.

I won't consider it betrayal, but as others said, i will look into the reason why he chose the forum over mine.

If i'm a member of a programming forum and a gaming forum, i would choose to vote for the programming one as i like it the most. But others may have different view about it.

Site battles are just for fun. You shouldn't take it seriously. Forum reviews on the other hand is more serious and you should try getting one to make sure your forum don't have any issues.

They can But it depends. Newer sites may not win over older sites that have been maintained longer.

This.

Site battles are just another way of getting an opinion on what people think about your forum. If you're unhappy, you should just make improvements to your forum.
