I have seen many emails from forums with just some text and maybe a few things here or there, nothing really special as far as the design goes, so it got me thinking, "What if I just made a HTML template and sent that instead of these default emails?" and so I did just that. I went on MailChimp and started designing my emails to send out. I would then download the HTML file and paste it all into the email field. Worked like a charm and it was pretty amazing seeing my email all decked out like that.
Have you ever messed with the default email templates to spruce them up?
For our newsletter I signed up for MailChimp but it wasn't really worth it at the time for our needs. If I ever start to send out regular emails or other announcements I might try using it again. It seemed semi-complicated as well but it might just take time to get used to. 😛 I just use plain html like <b>, <i>, etc..
I stick with just generic text based emails. If I had a need to send out weekly or monthly newsletters or whatever (most likely more for a blog than a forum), then I would definitely look into better options providing there was enough demand for those services to warrant the possible cost.
