I actually don't really associate 'black' with 'black hat' - why do you feel like that? It's usually nice if a forum has a dark theme (next to a light theme, because I personally prefer light themes) simply because it's easier on the eyes during nighttime.

If you're not a huge fan of dark themes, why don't you go for a mixed theme (light content area, dark background colour)?

Also, I actually do not really see why this should be considered 'news'. There is literally zero activity on the forum. Plus, the theme is just a free theme - which doesn't matter and could be a nice addition if there would be any activity at all - but nobody actually benefits from this now so I don't think the 'update' all that interesting right now. You should try and get some conversations started on that forum.

The birth of a forum is considered news by the "milestone" guidelines. Also, yes, I don't see the big deal about black.
 
Basic but clean. I feel like I've seen at least 10 sites using this same theme. I would work on making some content.

There are no good free themes in development yet, but a decent number of premium ones. The developers obviously want to upgrade premium stuff first.
