Do you think it is more difficult making money by making commercial paid software which charges people to use it because of so many great free alternatives like OpenOffice, Abiword, CCleaner?
I think certain categories of software like Web browsers, Disk Cleanup, Disk defrags, and Instant messengers can be very difficult to charge people money to use since there are already a lot of great free alternatives which can be downloaded for free, and work well.
Also, I got a feeling, once a freeware software maker sees that you are making a good amount of money from your paid software and have a decent user base, the freeware competitors might make a free or ad supported copy of software which does the same task as your software.
Plus, when I browse online at file sharing sites, I see a lot of people downloading pirated versions of paid software which cost hundreds and thousands of dollars.
