I have some people in my circle who are so wary of Facebook and Twitter. They are so conscious of hackers and posers (people who create false identity). Sometimes I ask myself if those people have a good reason for their worrying. In the beginning, social media is a way of connecting to people, regardless of who those people are. But now there is the proliferation of false news, false warnings, chain items where you have to share and some other nonsensical items. And then Facebook never run out of apps that are senseless. Where is social media going? I really don't know if it is worth looking forward to.
There are reasons to worry about. People impersonating others, nothing new. Breaking people's password? Easy. With proper knowledge and tools simple passwords can be cracked easily. Hell, you might not even need any knowledge, just run the tool and hope your target has weak password. Reasons like these are good enough for people to worry.
In case you want to have better protection, try making your password something like 14848a46986r56f/%
I know it might be silly, I just randomly type that, but for the numbers you could use your grandmothers birthday, not a thing many people would know. And add letters after day / month / year.
Lets say your grandmother was born on 17.3.2047. and her name was Anne Johnson
You password could be 17a3J2047 (note that I have put J as a capital letter, another trick you could do)
Now, to make it even safer you can just add some symbols to it.
For example @17a3J2047$#
It is all up to you how you want it to go.
But those are some good tips on securing your account.
As for facebook being full with junk, that is a fact. Even worse, there are lots of click-baits, sites that will gain control over your account and spam your friends (although, I think this issue might have been fixed). It used to be a big flaw back in the time. Make sure that you know what you are about to open, is it a safe site. If you have no idea of the site and it looks shady, has a weird name, domain I would suggest you to avoid it. Not everything might be fake and bring you problems, but for people who have liked trillions of pages back in the time when facebook became a thing, you might consider about removing most of those likes. I did revision of my liked pages few years after I have opened my account and I have found some sites that I would never, ever even think about liking. People have changed their name, started dealing with click-baits and what not.
All the good reasons to be careful around social media 🙂
I think Facebook and Twitter are kind of the need of the hour. Even governments and civil servants are handling requests through Twitter. Its just that you need to use them properly and be regular on changing your passwords.
Whenever a person invents something good for all, there are others who can invent a way to misuse, abuse, or use the invention for “purposes other than intended”.
Example: Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone and revolutionized communication. The obscene phone caller thought it was a great invention to make random nasty phone calls to people and frighten and harass them in the middle of the night. Did we stop using the telephone? No! We went further and invented mobile phones!
Example: Mark Zuckerberg thought it would be cool for people to reconnect with long lost friends and family, and came up with Facebook. President Obama approached Zuckerberg to help him reach voters and win the presidency! He made use of Facebook the way John Kennedy made use of the television. Why not? The technology is awesome! But fakers and haters think Facebook and other social media is a great way to become an imposter, engage in cyber bullying, trick people into donating money to causes that don't exist, etc.
Inventions don't stop people from making conscience decisions, on their own, to choose between what's right and what's wrong or between what's good and what's evil.
