Here's a tip since I noticed Forum Promotion has a link directory.

The Internet has changed. Directory scripts used to be an effective way to build your site link-popularity and increase your rankings in search engines. Not anymore! As of now, directory software can bring a load of problems to your site, often irreversible. Nowadays, links directory scripts should be avoided at all costs.

Why? First, you would be losing your time - building links-popularity through directory-script reciprocation does not work anymore. Second, it is now official that directories are very likely to cause long-term or even permanent exclusion from major search engines, like Google. Third, directories are now nearly useless for end visitors and bring little value to your site.

Recent observations prompt us to recommend that you not deploy link directories on your sites anymore and consider removing your current link directories (unless you're absolutely confident about their value).

I've noticed this as well, hence the reason why I never use directories. However, I have submitted my site to search engines, so will this affect my site?

I agree with Fowler, it's just like your saying "Building backlinks or using keywords for your site doesn't effect Google ratings". It's really up to the webmaster.

That is the bit i would love to see solid proof proving especially considering we are in hundreds of directories and we are very high up in Googles Rankings and we get tonnes of traffic from Google and all search engines for that matter. We certainly haven't been excluded from search engines as we are part of hundreds.

Yeah if this were true I would have some worry but right now I'm not sure. If it is though, I need to know before I start to promote my new forum.

I would like to see a source of this info.

I have yet had a negative outcome when submitting to directories.

I wasn't necessarily saying you will get penalized for submitting to a link directory, but Google has been placing little to no value on link directories for a while now. Therefore, by submitting to a link directory, it's going to do you no good when it comes to SEO, sure if it's a frequently visited directory it might get you some traffic but it wont help your rankings. After all, the whole goal of building links to to have your links on sites that have high rankings, thus increasing your own rankings. I suggest you all do some research on SEO and do a search on Google before you tell me it's rubbish. Here, I'll even provide a nifty link for you: http://www.google.com/search?q=google+l ... penalizing

Look mate, don't believe half the sh** you read on the internet, the day that google comes out and says it, ill believe you, until then this topic is dead to me 😉.
