Haha! I'm testing out the XenForo admin control panel and I love the way there is a 'discourage' feature that basically causes errors and failures to annoying users. It's a great idea and seems like a really decent piece of software actually.

Is XenForo worth the money, in the long run is it worth buying or is it better off just staying with free software like phpBB and MyBB etc? I am liking it so far though.

xD I love this feature! I shoved it on a disgruntled member and now he sends me emails every so often to, if anything, make him not discouraged! It's a great feature!

Oh man, this is a tricky subject. My POV: Xenforo is an AMAZING piece of software, and I recommend it to everyone who can get there hands on it. However, you can't just rush in and buy it because you like it; you actually need an idea of what you're going to do. I recommend carefully planning out what you want to do with the software(what customizations you would like to incorporate, how you would like to theme it, etc.) as well as what kind of forum you plan to run on it. Because, the truth is, one of the saddest things is when people spend all this money on getting their forum set up, they really don't have any effort or motivation to actually run their forum well! If you have a forum planned out well, and you really plan on being devoted, I definitely recommend XF. Otherwise, I'd say stick with the free software and don't end up regretting wasting $140 on a failed community 😉

All I would add to what Darthmaul has said, is that it is better to cut your teeth on free software, it will give you an insight on how to run a forum without the cost, once you have done that for year or so, you will fully appreciate the features that Xenforo has, it's very easy to use, once you get used to the different terminology.

I agree, it's a great piece of software but I'm not looking to actually run a forum. I thought I'd just see what the hype is all about. It's also a lot of money as well so it's certainly something you shouldn't rush into either.

If you just want to see what it's all about, I recommend buddying up to someone with a license and seeing if they will let you in to their closed off installation that they're allowed 😉

There is a discourage feature? That's pretty convenient.

Also, I think that Xenforo is completely worth it, if not worth more. I am planning to buy it soon enough.

My (few) members love it, all have them have said that the features are easier to use than phpBB, it jsut needs a few more user friendly add ons, mine miss the lottery, and the betting which they had with phpBB3.
Yes it is a lot of money, but the backup and service is second to none, you get access to the community forum, Brogan will normally respond to a query in a matter of minutes. The other techies on there are great too.
