I have found myself telling members not to advertise in their avatars until they reach whatever guidelines I have set; actually I would rather not have advertising in avatars period but that's just my opinion. Do advertising rules govern your member's avatars as well? Would you ban advertising in avatars completely if you could?

I don't see a problem with it. If I allow advertising in signatures, I don't see why I shouldn't allow it in avatars either.

See I ban the use of advertising in avatars, it's why we have signatures. I mean, depending upon the avatar and HOW it's being advertised I might let it slide, but if it had a URL in it or something saying "Follow us on Twitter" then I wouldn't simply because it's tacky and well, shouldn't be in the form of an avatar. 😛

I wouldn't have a problem with it either, i allow signatures with links back to our members board

I usually don't forbid it, but here's something that I think is important to realize:

Advertising a site is about networking. An avatar will make your site more prominent in each post you make, but it will also make you seem less like a real person. If you are interested in getting the most promotion value out of a site, I recommend being yourself, and participating a lot on the site, while using every opportunity that doesn't seem tacky, or isn't against the rules, to self-promote.

Never had the problem of a user advertising under their avatar and I wouldn't really unless it looks like a proper banner with text all over it. If its just a letter or logo I might be fine with it

I guess it doesn't look good, but I don't see any real harm by allowing advertising in avatars while allowing them in signatures. I do agree that it makes the user look less like a real person but that harms them more I guess.

I wouldn't disallow it, personally. However, I honestly think it makes the user look somewhat robotic; because a promotion avatar looks like a walking ad for a site, in my opinion. 😛

If promotion in the sigs is allowed, I can't see it being 'fair' to not be able to in your avatars. I've never just not allowed it. But usually the people that do that are often the people who join a forum only for services and etc, and do not intend on participating in the forum.

I don't mind it either way - especially if they are enjoying and partaking in the community. The only thing we limit is the size of how big it can be.

I'd say it looks tacky if a person is using their avatar AND signature to advertise. One or the other is fine, but both would be overkill.

Observe We bar the employment of marketing in avatars, it's precisely why we have now signatures. I mean, to match the avatar in addition to HOW it's staying publicized I may allow it to needlessly slip, but in the event the item had the LINK inside or maybe a thing expressing "Follow all of us on Twitter" i quickly would not mainly because it's ugly in addition to very well, must not be by means of the avatar.

I'd have to agree with John. For me I would have trouble being social with that member being as they come off insincere about being a member on the forum. It does tell me that they only joined to promote their forum or their website.

I don't care what my members put as an avatar so long as they have set one 😛

I usually allow people to use whatever avatar they want, although I'd caution against using an avatar that is an ad. It will just make people think every post of yours is spam. 😛

I'd be against it because the sig should be enough for any kind of promotion. I just find it kinda weird having an avatar stating a url or site/forum name. Just comes across as the member just joined for the sole purpose to advertise. 😛
