Have you done any DIY projects?
When I was 16, I went to the ATC and I was in one class, I forget the name now, but the thing was, for the first semester we learn all the basics of building a house, electrical, installation and others. The second semester, if you passed, you started building a two story house, as a group. The whole class build a house up to code, and big enough for a family of 3-4 to live in.
It may not be a DIYOURSELF project, but it was fun.
