For purposes of ranking high in Google search, which type of domain name works best for you; one that is short and brandable (such as product name) or a longer keyword rich domain name? Here are some things to consider.

With a longer domain name, you have the opportunity to use a keyword phrase. For instance, if you are in the beauty/skin care niche, you might be able to incorporate 'best beauty tips' or 'free beauty tips' into your domain name.

A shorter name is good for brandable purposes. So if you have a famous product that is widely searched on Google, this might be the best option.

If you can find a new TLD extension such as .xyz and then get a really short one keyword name such as beauty.xyz, that would be an ideal scenario, especially if your main one word keyword is already taken for the popular .com/.biz/.us.

From my knowledge, the length of the domain doesn't really matter much for being SEO friendly. Also using names that aren't words found in dictionary would be good, which means to come up with new name or phrases. And using TLD really helps, as mentioned in your 4th paragraph, portraying as a established domain.

As a SEO guru and after having written so many articles, there is no difference between the long and shorter URLs. What matters is the content quality other than that although a too lengthy URL wont work better.

The domain extension does matter though. A point to take note.

Beverly,

It really does NOT matter what your domain name is, or how long it is.

In order to attract people to your site and to make other people referencing your site (both of which will help increase your search engine ranking), you need to have good quality content, which ideally should be updated regularly.

Do not try to "fool" search engines, because it simply does not work.

Create a high quality website, be patient, and if it is good, traffic will start coming, and gradually increase.

Best if your url is relevant to your sites genre both from a search engine and a human point of view, if eg I did a search for free classifieds and the top 2 results were freeclassifieds.com and hgkiyug.com I would choose choose the first site because to my mind it is more relevant to what I am searching for.

I was going to say this. Although domain name doesn't affect search ranking, the kewords does gets highlighted if they are preset in your domain name. It would improve the click through rate.
