Possibly, I think many people use their tablets longer. I still read a lot of post from people using their old iPad 1, iPad 2, and Amazon Kindle Fire which are all tablets which are 3-4 years old.

I think people keep using tablets so long because a lot of people mainly use tablets to surf mobile websites, use apps like Angry Birds, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, ebooks, and watch YouTube/Netflix video where an iPad 1-2, and Kindle Fire is usually good enough for most tablet tasks.

I am using lenovo tablet for more than 2 years.I need it badly than laptop because most of the work of internet surfing I do is on my tablet.I am not a busy internet user but still keep mostly tablet with myself.Yes, people prefer to keep tablet for a long time.

The iPad 3 is also a very good tablet with a Retina Screen, and faster processor and graphics chip. I think it is one of the best Used/Refurbished bigger screen tablet you can buy on eBay for $300 or less.

I bet a lot of iPad 3 owners will keep using the iPad 3 for many more years because it still has very good performance, screen, and camera.

Apple came out with the Swift programming language ( https://developer.apple.com/swift/ ) which runs on Apple iOS, and OS X, so Apps which are coded and re-coded with the Swift coding language should run faster on the iPad, and other iOS devices.

Swift is an innovative new programming language for Cocoa and Cocoa Touch. Writing code is interactive and fun, the syntax is concise yet expressive, and apps run lightning-fast.
