I will be the first to admit I have been "too lazy" to go and add reputation to someone's profile, and being on some forums I honestly do not see many people use the reputation system, so do people on your forum use it? What are some of the things people can do to encourage people to use this system?
Some forums get more reputations by providing helpful resolution to real problems. I have experienced likes of more than 50 in a couple of other forums.
I love using the reputation system. Sometimes someone can be very helpful or provide a really good post on a forum and there is not much you can add to the conversation; being able to give one or two reputation points is a great alternative to simply liking a post.
It's good on a forum like FP where you use people to get services from etc. and you can see what kind of experience other people have had with a specific member and it is also use quite often on those massive general forums. I like using it as I can can tell a member that I appreciate their work etc.
I used to use the reputation feature a lot on IPB when I was an admin of one. I'd often give Rep to people who were encouraging other members, also those who would step above the rest in doing something. It's encouraging and also rewarding in a way.
I feel like most people overuse it though because people would often just give it to their bestfriends for silly reasons.
I often enough find that people don't use the reputation system at all. About a year ago I was apart of this forum and the reputation system was integrated with the like system just so that people would actually use it, so when you like a post it's added to the reputation, and it worked and I find that many forums should do that instead of just the simple reputation system.
I use it and it's pretty popular on our forum. It's basically way of saying "nice post", "I agree", "helpful content", etc without responding or liking a post if a forum has that plugin installed.
Reputation used to be hugely popular on FP a few years ago. People really cared a big deal about their reputation number, including me. 😛 Not quite as much anymore though. I think I care a decent bit about reputation, particular since I remember those days, but mostly on FP. I don't pay attention to it on most forums.
It's wonderful to receive some more reputation, and I certainly give it out in return. I feel like it's a mod that is worth using, if only to encourage your members to keep doing what they're doing. I don't agree with negative rep though - reasons why somebody should want to negative rep a member is most likely something that should be between the member and staff.
I actually like how it is on FP. It takes work to give it to someone. Here's an example of how reputation system can go wrong: I was a moderator on a forum that had about 10,000 posts, and one admin has about 2,400 posts, but he has 350+ rep points, but he's never done any exchanges or anything. He's just been repped a lot because he's an admin, and it's so easy to use the rep system on IPB. The rep system can be very beneficial, but it shouldn't be too easy to use. 😛
