Do Promotion Forums Need Service Teams?

____________________________________________________________

I N T R O D U C T I O N

While thinking about how the form could evolve I stumbled into an idea of a forum without staff, it made me really think? and so I have made this debate to see your views! I see staff as an asset to the progress of a forum but, are they really needed?

R E A S O N I N G

Forums operate with the idea that users interact and communicate with each other through the sharing of ideas, and the main problem some forums have is that the staff post more than their community, creating a flood of staff posts which some new users are put off by.

We all want a successful forum but I think we all maybe falling into the same trap, we all copy each other which can help or hinder us. A good example would be promotion forums, one forum changed Moderator to Community Team and they all followed suit.

This is why I think we maybe in that trap, as a forum owner of a promotion forum you feel you need to offer services because other promotion forums do the same and to do that you need staff. What if that is not needed and all you need to make a successful forum was a strong Admin team and a few moderators? if you can build and manage your own forum then you can offer that service to your members dependent on size.

C O N C L U S I O N

In conclusion, I feel that you can run a forum on what Naval captains call a skeleton crew, this then enables more posts to appear from members rather than staff which is a good thing? I am not saying we should all have no teams on our forums, what I am saying is there are other options than to copy the next forum you see.

Do You Agree With What I Am Saying? Let me Know!

99% of forums out there just have moderators and administrators. This discussion seems specific to this one forum we're on called Forum Promotion and it happens to have different staff teams in place. So, the question should be: Does FP need to have teams? ...My answer to that is yes because an individual staff member can focus on a single task and do it well instead of feeling overwhelmed by having to do a little bit of every thing.

Well almost all forums have teams as each group provided it has more then one person on it is in fact a team whether or not you recognize it as such. Some forums get by with only two teams of those being admin and mod teams while others like a promotion board might have other teams besides admin and mod teams depending on what services they offer such as reviews, packages, etc.

I don't really care who is posting as long as there are posts made particularly those of which I could offer a reply to. If that is in place, then it would be a great place to be at regardless if it is mostly staff or non staff doing the posting.

All forums need staff for no other reason than enforcing your host's ToS. Hosting companies don't tend to be very happy if they find out that hate speech, porn, or any form of exploitation is on their servers.

I am really only talking about promotion forums here, I am not talking about FP, well I am in a general term but it is more focused on Promotion Forums. phpBB Communities (Original), FP, Promotion Era etc... all have teams other than admin and the question still stands do we need them.

I agree that some may feel overwhelmed, but the next question would do you need staff to complete requests or can you open it up to everyone which is what happened to the design team here on FP.

I understand your view, I don't care who it is that is posting as long as there is good content.

I do understand this, what I should have said was do we need service teams?

great! FP is going to be banned very soon! you said the word 😛 haha

I see this point! how can one guy in this group deal with 100s of jobs on FP? come on it needs to be an team of three or so depending on the size of the website so that the 100s of jobs are split into three group members and the job will get done faster. Unless is to hide there group rank, but still have powers

Somehow, I don't think this is sinking in... I am not saying strip back teams what I am saying is that you don't actually need a service teams at all. you can have the service centre open to anyone, it would then be the admins and mods jobs to keep the board moderated. they don't have to do the requests. it can be peer to peer (user to user)

They already got there hands full of doing other important things, So can't see if it be done. Yeah and CT can lock or remove and they have little more time then the admins. How does it fit from the other exchange broad that members offer requests to other members

I think the point I am getting at is that you only have the exchange... how is that monitored? it is the same nothing changes.

Without "teams", staff members in general you would have a complete anarchy which would be pretty bad for any site, honestly. Rules, laws, etc exist to protect people not harm them or control them of basic personal freedoms. Staff will always be needed regardless.

what about, Twitter and Facebook. they have staff yes! but not visible staff. I think the point I am trying to make is that all of these forums have lots of teams and its really is not needed. Have requests open to the community and moderated by members who are staff yes but you dont have to have a team of 15 people you could have a team of lets say 6.

Honestly, there is no right or wrong both having a team and not having a team would work. Yes its different but that is why change is good.

I understand what you mean and maybe you should change the title to "Do Promotion Forums need service teams?" because it seems like a few people misunderstood you. Technically, having Admins and Moderators count as having teams. Anyways, to answer your question, it depends on how much benefit the service teams brings to the forum. If a small Promotion forum just has exchanges and no official services, you may lose members when members themselves fail to make post exchanges with other members but if you have official service, then they may stay active for that. For larger forums, this may be less of an issue because there are more members to make post exchange agreements with.

More staff also means more ideas which could improve the forum and I think generally a larger team is more beneficial to the forum. Even though it may turn out that most of the forum posts are made by staff, this won't actually be a negative thing in my opinion. The important thing that encourages members to post is activity and it doesn't matter whether the posts are made by staff or members.

I have changed the title...

yeah I see what your saying, I mean I would always post in the exchange but if there was a service for the thing I needed I would rather use that. maybe have the service section being monitored like the editorial team seems to be doing now. It might be a case of having the exchange have their own section and allow users to request and the community to help

Thats an interesting idea!

Btw, your poll has closed so people can't vote. 😛
