Do you think public schools in the US need to be reformed?

Do you think there should be classes that will help students such as learning how to save money, pay property tax, how to fill out job resumes, etc.
Just basic life stuff that they're not learning from their parents instead of taking half a dozen math classes they're probably never going to use outside of the school once they graduate?

I think public schools need to go back to teaching the basics. When I was in high school, we had to take Government and Economy classes and I don't know if that's mandatory anymore. It helped me so much as I learned about how to do things after graduation, such as keeping a check book and writing a real check!

Some things are different for each state, so that's kind of a problem, and I'm not really keen on the government taking over again. That Department of Education should have done better.

I think schools should cover basic life skills like doing taxes, writing a resume, voting, etc. We had Civics class in Year 10 which was the closest thing for us. I distinctly remember having a class where we filled in forms to get our tax file numbers. I'm fond of it because I don't know when I would have gotten off my arse to do it outside of class.

I hate the, 'Oh you'll never use Maths,' argument because even if you won't work in STEM, it's training for your brain and gives you a lot of benefits. Most students won't be professional athletes either but we still schedule Phys Ed because we know this training is good for more reasons than just work.

Yes, I think public schools in the U.S. could benefit from some reform. Education needs to keep adapting to modern needs, technology, and different learning styles so students are better prepared for the real world.

There should absolutely be courses in common sense topics that are in real life. They need to know about credit scores, banks, loans, employment searching skills etc..

I mean, a trustworthy and financial savvy person can even use banks to survive when they don't have a job, food and/or housing.

Agree on the points raised so far, classes for account balancing or to just know how to see how much money you have remaining in your banking account can go a long way. Another thing is to bring back classes like home economics, shop, and mechanics. We've lost a lot of the joy and know-how for the basic things you should know around the house.

I've met several people who are illiterate and I know at least some graduated high school. This is ridiculous! How can this even happen? It says something really bad about the US public school system. 😡
