Do we need staff for small forums?

I see staff as free members for a small forum. It's a way of rewarding people for contributing to the forum. It's like saying "If we can build this forum so that it truly deserves a couple moderator, you two, who helped us found this forum, get the spots."

At the moment I have my co-admin and another CTM with me helping start the forum off. It's always nice to have different views and skills on the table to open a forum - and once opened, it's nice to have that cushion of help. ^.^

I think a moderator, as you say, is just a pat on the back, but I don't think they're really needed in many cases.

I think it's better to have just the owner run the forum for awhile until it's a little bit more active and then that's when they can start hiring staff such as moderators to the forum.

I agree that a small forum can operate without staff. However, the owner should be monitoring his forum as much as he can. I have encountered a forum with obviously no staff such that spam posts linger for weeks. To me, whether small or big forum, staffing is a requirement to at least have a moderator manning the boards.

I agree with others, if the forum is small enough then there is no real need for staff. My forums restarted a few months back and we're growing slowly but surely, but right now? it's just me and my girlfriend/co-admin running it. We have just under 70 members and just over 2,000 posts, it's fine being ran by the two of us at present. 🙂

For a small forum, I wouldn't have more than 2 to 3 staff members at the most. Even though you can probably manage a small forum by yourself, the extra one or two people can help out with other things like helping to advertise the forum and posting on the forum to help make it seem a little more active.

As a sole admin you can go very far before needs additional staff. Maybe when there are hundreds of new posts every day.

My small forum only generate 10 posts per day and no problem at all moderating it.

Unless you can't handle everything yourself you don't need staff.

This is true. For a small forum you really only need one or two people if there's not a lot of new posts per day. If you start getting overwhelmed then it's time to add a new member to the staff to help take on the load.

With all honesty it depends only on:
1. Amount of people on forum
2. Type of forum and it's community

Currently, I am running three forums and I do not have staff on any forums. I do not think we need staff on small forums.

When a forum has up to 150 active users, there is surely a need for a staff. There is no need of hiring a staff for a forum that is not active.

You don't need to pay a staff as the era of volunteer moderators haa gone. You can use automated moderation tools to handle moderation on your forum.
