I spend a few minutes watching and playing Hello Kitty things as native Asian person. I'm wondering if friends from the West have heard of Hello Kitty and other kawaii (cute) Japanese things?

It is definitely a thing in the west. I do not believe it has a very large following, at least not compared to other subjects like it, but it is certainly quite established and around.

I grew up and went to school with girls who loved the show.

My spouse loves Hello Kitty, and so does one of their coworkers. 🙂 It's quite popular here in the west, probably not as popular as it is in Japan but still popular!

It was very popular when I was a bit younger. It's more advertised for younger children/youth, but there are of course the adults now that like it as well. Just not as typical here to find adults who enjoy Hello Kitty.

It's definitely a popular icon in that you'll see no shortage of people wearing Hello Kitty shirts / bags etc. One of my friends is actually into Hello Kitty though and was telling me there's a whole story behind her, like she's "five apples tall" etc, before that I would literally have thought she was just a fashionable icon!

It is very popular so I believe that Western people also watch it. It portrays lots of fun too.
