Very true and search engines are not ignoring directories I've noticed that directories drive domain authority quite a lot. I've tested a site by just building specific links to see whats more effective and it's all dependant on the sector your website is targeting. Directories are good for pretty much every niche but I don't see the point in paying for them as it's a listing site for businesses and that should always be a free service.It's a waste of money just use some free time to build your own or pay for an SEO company to do it for you as you'd be mad not to I don't really self advertise on FP but here is our site feel free to take a look https://wearedapa.co.uk/
If I see metrics go up - especially trust flow (Majestic.com) or the one from Ahrefs (have to pay to see that one), then I'm happy. Quality directories drive up these metrics, so they help out big time, unless the search engines are specifically ignoring directories - despite the help they give to metrics.
I doubt if any good directories are free - either free at all or free in the sense that a fast listing doesn't cost money.
