Sendgrid has been a blessing for me as its reporting tools have really simplified these tasks for me. I will say that I do slack on keeping up with them, but I do from time to time.
I have a newsletter with about 1,600 subscribers. I usually have an open rate of more than 50%. When it drops under that, I'll do social media campaigns telling people to check their spam folders and add my email to their contact list.
This is something I have not done but I feel I do need to as I feel it would help a lot in my emails getting seen rather than lost in spam.
I can understand why they end up in the spam folder but it can be frustrating if you send an email that is important and it doesn't get seen by the recipient.
Due to my extensive use of forums, major mail server hosts like Outlook and Google have blacklisted me. They flagged the high volume of mail being sent when users sign up or subscribe to threads, resulting in my server emails being consistently marked as spam. However, I resolved this problem by transitioning to Mailchannels for sending emails, and since then, I haven't encountered any issues with my mail delivery.
I check the reports to make sure all emails are being delivered although I don’t tend to narrow it down to spam as I haven’t sent anything which users haven’t looked for (like newsletters etc) and generally just use it for activation emails. Most users know to check the spam folder if they don’t have it in their inbox however I might try sending a one off email to test it.
Yes I'll always view reports for email marketing and will normally also export certain metrics to a dashboard to keep track of - such as open, bounce and click rates. Nice to have this data to hand whenever needed and then using it to improve future mails out.
