For those of you with your own site and also skilled in design (at whatever level), do you design the things you need for your site or do you still prefer to outsource and get it from someone better than you? No matter how good you are, there is still someone (several someones) out there better than you...

Personally I hate using my own work on a site I run, mostly because I hate most of what I make even if it isn't that bad. I'd rather pay a little bit of cash to get something made than do something myself most of the time. Anyone else like this?

Usually I take a pre-made theme and adapt it to fir the site. I haven't really ever taken to time to learn how to theme IPB, etc, but I do now how to modify an existing theme, and that's what I usually do.

Depends which angle we are discussing here really!

I run a phpBB forum, which is currently running the ProSilver theme. However, I have heavily customised it in every area (coding to graphics).

Otherwise, our entire site is coded, structured and designed by my own hands (without a whisper of template, web builder or anything else).

All the best,
Cal 🙂

Perhaps for a first theme, I can see myself designing it; however, I generally prefer to outsource on all projects.

I am not that good at designing so I just take whats free. Modifying the color and replacing a few images is the most I do to my themes or sites.

I use my own work. Since I've been using Photoshop for over 8-10 years, I'm confident with my design skills and yes, you are right, someone out there is always better. But I rather not pay for any services when I can do it myself. However, if I needed animation or a nice logo design then I go with paid service.

.. also, although demand has dropped over the years (with no support from Apple), I can still put Flash projects together, where the occasional request is put my way!

All the best,
Cal 🙂

I do this as well. I'm not amazing at writing a design from scratch, but I can take other's work and make it customized to my project. 🙂

We all have to start somewhere - no question about that!!!

However, the further down the road you travel, there is nothing more satisfying than creating something from scratch (even with several hours of stress along the way!).

All the best,
Cal 🙂

I can take pre-made themes and turn them into entirely different and orignial themes. I can't code from scratch though. I need that pre-set foundation. So usually everything I do is custom.
