Do you get wary of joining new forums?

Why/ why not? There seems to be new forums opening up every day wanting to try their hand at running their own.
Do you tend to join these newer forums right away or take the wait & see approach? Are you cautious before jumping in? I do want to support forums but it can get annoying when the owner expects members to fill in with content.

Actually. I'm joining less and less forums. People don't stay active most of the time and that causes me to be less motivated about posting on their forum. Might as well not join at all.

Precisely. People start forums and expect to get paid the next day, without themselves contributing to it.

I usually give the forum a bit of time before I decide to join. If I see that the staff hasn't been online in over a week if it's a brand new forum, I'll stay away. I also look and see how the forum is set up, if it's easy to navigate and has at least one topic in every sub forum I'll join.

Yuuup, big time for me. I have joined a few over the past days and notice little to no activity on them. As someone said on another forum...

"that's a problem now. Instant gratification seems to be word for the day, and forums don't provide that.
I STILL believe that forums have a place... but due to that very same instant gratification crowd, there is not the high usage of them. Seems that to many people got trained into the 144/288 character posts to "say something" and actually having a detailed and lengthy conversation is well outside their comfort zone."

So I tend to not really join many forums cause they don't seem to be active or stay active for a long period. I see topics from 2020-2021 on some of them.

Yes, I do.get wary of joining forums mostly because Im an introvert online just as much as offline. I lurk first to getthe feel.and flow of the members and their posts. Are they cool?.Are they kind? Are there any cliches?

Also reading others replies, Im am.into agreement with all of you.

Normally, I don't join a new forum, however, when I decide to join it is usually for post exchange or to receive posting rewards.

I am someone that never minds joining a forum but I dislike when forums open and expect the members to fill the forum with content whilst they do not bother. I also am very wary of people who create a forum, have it open for a little and then close it and open another. If I see someone doing that I will stop joining as it just gets a bit much.

I generally join a forum under specific conditions:
  1. It's a subject I'm passionate about.
  2. A friend runs the board.
  3. The board has enough activity for me to consider being a member.

I will never join a forum (Unless it's for the PTM role) if the forum hasn't been worked on. If it has the default forum theme or empty sections no thank you.

I did join and contribute a lot to a couple of new forums a while ago because I had an real interest in the niche but they both folded and got taken down without warning. I highly doubt I'd do it again.

I try to join forums with the intention to help them out.

We do need forums after all if we want niches like FP to work, even my own niche.

But sometimes I join and owner is active, people start posting, and they immediately become inactive. I hate when that occurs.

I get a few days here and there. I know how that is myself but every time you login and your new topic was the last new topic made... something isn't good there.

Not usually, but I do look over forums before I sign up for them. If they appear to be too inactive, I generally won't bother to sign up.

There is a certain forum owner out there who creates new forums constantly (and closes them). When I came back to the forum world 8 months ago I joined that person's forums because I was just getting settled back into forums again and didn't know the forum I was joining was going to be deleted soon. Since then, I've noticed a pattern of forum-create/delete behavior, so, I won't be joining any more of their forums. Why invest my time and energy on something that wont be there in a month? Seems like a waste of time.

I'll join other people's new forums though if I like what I see or if I like the person who created the forum.

When I stepped foot in the forum scene 20 years ago, I was nervous. But when I joined the first Proboards forum in the fall of 2003, I learn and learn and made new friendships along the way. At times I'm wary, and at times I'm not.

Very much annoys me and know who you're talking about. I honestly will not join that person's forums anymore at all and tbh I'd not even entertain the idea of doing post packages. They never did anything wrong to me, but I am not their biggest fan. I was a package team member then was promoted to leader on a similar forum to this one ages ago. This is when I figured out they made 100s of forums. Anyway, for sure agreed.
