I talked about rules in an earlier post and I'm sure most forum owners have some sort of rules page/post.

But how about other policies that forums generally have? Terms of Use, Privacy, Disclaimers, etc.

Do you have these policies on your forum? Do you just use the default policies that usually come with the forum? Or are you customizing these policies to further fit your need of the forum's legal terms?

Does your forum warn of cookies? Is it GDPR compliant? Is it COPPA compliant? Do you try to remain compliant with these special internet conditions that many countries are now adopting?

I do write legal documents sometimes for sites but they tend to be quite basic and on;y if strictly necessary. As for my forum, it's whatever the default is for phpBB. I didn't think I really needed any to be perfectly honest.

I have a "Terms Of Use" page set up with everything to cover myself and the members.

With rules and online activity that you have to be careful of you might as well have it there and set up then if something poops, you are flap sided.

I have moderation policies posted so that members will know that there are only a certain amount of warnings given until a ban.

I also have policies for staff such as how to moderate the site and what to do when they take a leave of absence.

All policies are either written in terms of compliance (GDPR, COPPA), or are in terms from a legality standpoint (owner/operator difference, contest rules/eligibility aspects).

The biggest ones to be mindful are include those where you want to target your audience (or where you may have audience members visiting and joining from). Otherwise you may end up in a sticky situation if someone becomes a PITA.

I set policies because if I run ads. If you want to run aads, you are required to set the policy page.

I do have certain rules or moderation policies in order to help keep things civil within the community. I want it to be a place where people can just be comfortable and discuss their favorite literature.
