I don't really except for some posts and FP$ 😛

Obviously I also buy domains and stuff but that's not really forum based stuff.

I also occasionally purchase VIP memberships to support other forums.

I do not have the luxury of getting a domain for 10 value in my currency. So, yes, I have spent a lot.

Over seven years of my life I have spent a lot. To get the best of all things you would end up spending money anyway. invasion power board speaks for itself alone without saying anything else about custom themes and plugins. The worse part about it all is that everything is going up in price and site owners have to deal with that... More so than 5 years ago.

I had to renew my licence the other day for six months at $135,

Nope. I donated money to CH so that the owner could get some things that were needed, but that was at the beginning and it wasn't even a lot of money.

I used to, when I had a decent paying job and disposable income, but these days no, I'm cautious with money.

Even I used to be able to afford IPB 10 or so years ago. I would use their cloud hosting service. 😱

That's even more costly than buying it and hosting it yourself....

Buying the package yourself would cost around $300 to $500 then again once you got it you own it for life, other then keeping the license active

I spent money on a domain name for my old forum back in the day. With other forums, the total sum I've donated is 80 dollars towards 2 different communities.

Many years ago it was like $20 a month or something.

Starting price is $89 a month now ;( for the full package it's $549 a month

My server is a Cloud Dedicated Server, $196 a month, but I pay $87-ish for backups, threat monitoring. Total hovers around $270 mark.

But every year, that adds up because I spend a lot of money on domains.

You win some, you lose some.

I have 6 licenses (which a few of them will be sold). And renew them every year. I'm currently waiting on xenForo to update to 2.3 or something before renewing.

Skins, I renew only after a major update like 2.2 to 2.3 coming up.. Same with plugins.

Sometimes I will expend funds to a website via VIP upgrades, but I do it for a variety of reasons. I wanted to learn how donations work from a user perspective.

I just spend money on a few upgrades for my forum at Proboards. Before anyone answers, the upgrades are not expensive by a longshot.

I have spent money on forums, I just recently renewed my Xenforo license and bought a theme too. I'm looking into getting another theme here shortly once I get paid again. I might look into commissioning a logo for my site as I'm not the best at designing graphics. 😛

Very expensive hobby and running those amounts of sites can add up.

I would have to have a full time good paying job to able to afford that each month

I've always managed to cover my costs involved through rentals, subscriptions, donations and at one time advertising.

Sometimes but for a start up not anymore..
Forums can go either way these days some successful some stay small..
