Do you think self defense classes should be introduced to schools and made compulsory?

They should be taught in school but I don`t think they should be made compulsory

If this was available in school, I would have taken it. But no, I don't think it should be a required class if it was in school.

It is already part of a mandatory class here. We have 5 classes of self-defense as part of 9th grade gym.

Edit: I've moved this to the debate corner, I think it fits better in here. 🙂

Do you enjoy it? Do you like the fact that it is mandatory?

I don't think so. Part of the issue with self defense is some people honestly do not want to defend themselves. If someone holds a gun or knife to your head, there generally isn't a whole lot you can do. On the other hand, in a fist fight, some people just cannot hold their own. It takes experience and determination that's needed outside the classroom.

If someone holds a gun to your head and you know they are going to shoot you, isn't it better if you try to retaliate? There are actually good techniques you can use to take the gun/knife from them. However, I agree that it takes experience and determination to use the technique effectively. Even though I have martial arts experience and know a little bit about these techniques, I won't feel confident in using it in a real life situation because I never tried it for real (hopefully never will need to 😛). Also, self defense classes in school is probably not enough to prepare you for these types of situations. A real martial arts school is probably better.

People can find themselves in a lot of dangerous situations where training could have saved their lives. It would probably save more lives to give people more mandatory training in driving rather than self defense. 😛

I think general preparedness classes should be introduced and required in public schools. By preparedness, I don't mean hill billies out in the woods building houses out of clay and buying up all of the 22s, lol. I mean general hazard preparedness - like how to be prepared for a major earthquake, a fire, a tornado...even terrorism. Self-defense IMO is preparedness and could be a good assignment to add to the curriculum.

I say all this because during a disaster, I feel that many children suffer the most. This is especially true for younger kids who are used to the world being one way and one way only, when it all suddenly changes in a chaotic and quick nature - I could only imagine what their overactive imaginations are doing to scare the living hell out of them.

Parents are not preparing their kids, most parents are not prepared them selves. Ask yourself this, whether you are a juvenile or a parent - do you and your family have any sort of rehearsed plan in action for something as big as an earthquake or a tornado? If not, imagine the chaos that would happen if something major like that would eventually happen.

That is my few cents! 🙂

If you incorporated martial arts in our American physical education program, I'm not sure our kids would survive. Martial arts is a discipline. It's almost a way of life. In Asia, there are whole schools devoted to different techniques of martial arts. I don't think American schools could properly teach martial arts. However, an introductory course could be offered as an extra curricular activity. It definitely should not be made compulsory.

In response to bullying, they should encourage kids to work out. Kids who seem strong are picked on less. It's sort of like how nations with nukes aren't messed with.

However, though, martial arts are fun as a sport, but I have yet to see where violence shuts up bullies as it does in the movies. Instead, it just seems to just increase the problem. At least, that's how it seemed when I in middle school.
