In short, not everyone really needs to be good with words. If you are just a simple man / woman, living your life the way you are, without attending any special events and such, you can do just fine with basics. Although, I believe that we should all expand our vocabulary. No matter how insignificant you might think you are, there could be a time where you could really use some extra words. Knowledge is our strongest weapon, and knowing to speak about wide variety of topics and which words to use to enrich the topic should matter. Do you think the same?

English is our second language but in the office, English is the standard written communications. As I had posted in another thread, I have joined forums to hone my written English. I guess my grammar is quite okay but my vocabulary needs to be expanded. It is noticeable that I have been using simple words maybe because I use common words and phrases in speaking. Anyway, I have been with forums for more than a year already and I think it has helped me improve my written communications. And with the vocabulary, I admire speakers who use proper words that I had encountered only in books and manuals.

I enjoy reading in my spare time and I've heard in the past that reading can help with things like this. So there is the possibility that I'm improving my vocabulary and not even realizing it.
Yeah, that is true indeed. I'm not a native English speaker, but I know my way around. I have been writing stories on English. Well, most of my day is spent by typing or speaking on English. Movies helped me a lot to learn it. As for school, I mostly had A's, but I honestly have no idea how grammar works by the rules. I have always used my ear to understand the differences. Rules, not so much.

English and Language Arts were always my best subjects. I can use big words with precision but I find that people tend to think you're a pretentious douche for trying to sound overly smart. Sometimes they are right. Depends on the person using those big words.
Ah, people like to think a lot of things. It shouldn't really bother you. If you can own a certain sentence with style, do it.
What I find really funny is hearing people fail with basic grammar and they come from a country which has English as native language. And, no, I am not talking about foreigners. I am aiming at the people that are native to those lands. It's a bit sad.
Well, I could say the same for every Croatian out there that fails with basics. Even worse, people fail with basics that they have been taught in the primary school. Pretty much Croatian 101. The stuff you should know.
