Good question, although how many is "too many" ? ~razz~
I agree with you in a sense that there are an awful lot that start up and die after a few days / weeks, but to those who start up and really put a lot of work into making sure they survive you have to say fair play to them.
Starting a new forum up these days is solid, especially gaming forums - especially when you consider that there are only so many games / consoles you can talk about.
At the end of the day, if people see a successful forum they'll want to copy it. For example, people copy promotion forums after being inspired by us / Forum Advertiser, people start new gaming forums after seeing sites like newgrounds flourish.
New forums will keep coming and coming, especially when you consider the amount of free forum hosts around as well. I guess all you can do is stick with the most successful / your favourite gaming forum and let the others die off.
Actually depends on what context, gaming discussion or clans/guilds/communities of gamers? I don't think their are that many gaming forums overall, they all cover the same theme and are all very alike but the communities vary greatly, which is the only thing that sets them apart.
There are also much too many promotion/advertising forums, GFX forums, and webmaster forums.
But there's a lot of gaming forums, for sure. None of them make it too far though. There will always be a big main one that everybody would go to.
Also, "gaming" is quite a vague term. There are many different types of "gaming" forums. Some forums focus on just 1 game, while others focus on a specific console and others on gaming in general.
i think there are to many. when making a gaming forum you should target a certain game, console ect. hoever many of the gaming forums on this site are great!
I will admit, most of my 'better' ideas have been inspired by someone somewhere, but I make sure that I never directly copy something without asking first (and most of time they let me).
There are too many forums of just about every kind (with some exceptions). This is a direct result of free hosted sites, giving the power to create a forum to an admin who honestly doesn't have the slightest idea what anything is. This is why I have dislike for free hosts ~confuse~
It would be like giving the power to create money to idiots, it would flood the market. Giving the power of creating sites to people without the proper know how to
A) Keep them going
B) Market them correctly
C) Use them to their full potential
Not to mention they don't know the first thing about 'real' forums. Most don't know what FTP is, how to install a MOD, or even basic (X)HTML. I can live with the people who know how to install MODs but don't know any real php coding, at least they know that much and can learn if needed later.
That all being said, you can still, to this day, create a very large website out of nothing. Twitter proved it if anything. You can start a proper gaming forum today, put in the needed work, money, time, ect, and end up with another GameFAQS (It's 20 topics per minute now, isn't it?).
The key to being huge in this mix up is simple, be unique. Since most free forums use phpBB at this point, you must DARE to be DIFFERENT. Whether you take that as creating your own forum script, or using an off brand software, that's up to you. It's your job as an admin and webmaster to make sure your forum is different from every other forum in the same 'category'.
I think there are too many gaming forums, well let me put it another way. Too many sucky gaming forums. There are the ones that are huge and those are the ones that are unique such as Ghost posted about or those that did put the time and effort into it. But since it is so easy to make forums, people make pretty bland ones and then clog up the "market" per say with mediocre forums. So like Ghost said again, these free forum hosting sitse are flooding the market and not just the gaming forum market but every catagory. People just need to dare to be different and find unique aspects, although I will admit that is getting harder and harder to do these days.
yeah. we have a gaming forum, one that picked up members fast and moved to get our own domain. its tough to be a game forum, but you'd surprised where you can find members. most of our old members were studs at online multiplayer games. this is because if someone finished first we'd send them a polite message saying that we believe our forum is a great fit for premier gamers like them and most of the time they joined and stayed active.
BUT, i love unique forums. for example, arsenal09's site is a fun site to look at. i think it will grow because there are not many like it and the people seemed very friendly. i don't think having a lot of forums is a problem as long as it's relative to the amount of people that are looking for a forum. here's how i look at it. just on the ps3 there were over 2 million accounts registered for call of duty world at war. now the top 100,000 will most likely all be members of a forum or join one if you tell them about yours (some may not be but some out of the 100,000 will join forums to make up for them). now that is enough to give 1,000 forums 1,000 members. 1k members is a lot for most sites and that is just one game on one console. this gives you an idea of how many people are out there. so there are not too many gaming forums, just too many gaming forums that don't put much effort into it.
Absolutely! Because the only Gaming Forum you really need is MINE! lol
All joking aside my REAL answer would be No. I love gaming forums and I visit as many as I can (though I can never seem to stay active). Still, I'll be a Gamer4Life and I'll always need somewhere to brag. That said... MORE GAMING FORUMS FTW.
Ah, but here's the thing. i've been on your site recently and i LOVE it! the whole set up is great and very user friendly, but your main focus in on the wii. Whereas some are all around and others are focus mostly on a specific area, that is why there are not too many gaming forums 🙂 i love video games lol
Well put (& I'm glad you like the site -D- ). You're right, My forum alone can't satisfy the entire gaming community (does great for Wii users though), that's why there needs to be a vast multitude of Gaming forums.
your welcome. my site recently found it's full identity. it started out as a small HQ for our clan but it grew into a site where ppl posted everything about their fav games. then it went to gaming news and that's where it's stayed for a while now with a recent site move thrown in
I believe that their are way to many gaming/coding forums. People are into what they are into. I just feel that some diversity is needed with so many forums why not focus on another hobby?
