I was just having a think to myself, forums are massive on the internet, and are not like normal sites. Do you think it would be good to have a TLD just for forums, so for example, if you had a forum about tropical fish, you could have 'www.tropicalfish.forum/' or 'www.tropicalfish.f' or something along those lines?

I think this would be a good idea, what with the introduction of the .xxx domain for adult sites, this could be a good implementation.

It would be awesome, although the cost would be high and I think people would stick with .com .net or .org because they are more popular.

In the 80's, The basic top level domains were released (.com, .edu, .gov, .int, .mil, .net, and .org). Then between 2000-2002, the following domains (and the country top level domains for each country) were released.

.ads, .africa, .air, .biz, .cash, .co-op, .dir, .dot, .dubai, .event, .fin, .find, .firm, .geo, .health, .i, .info, .kids, .law, .mall, .mas, .mus, .name, .nom, .one, .per, .pid, .post, .pro, .tel, .travel, .union, .web

The next planned release of TLD's are probably within the next couple years or so.

But in order to get a top level domain, like lets say .forum (http://www.example.forum/), you have to fork over $185,000 for the application. So, as you can see, it is quite expensive to launch a new top level domain. Even then, ICANN might reject it, depending on why you want to own the rights to that top level domain, so that you can sell domains with that extension.

Looks like I better get saving!

That would be kind of cool. Because as Flux said forums are not like Websites at all. They are totally in a class of their own. However, as GAF said, I can see this being seriously expensive, and really, they already got a lot of domains that can be very easily indexed by Google, so even if you don't get a lot out of forums, you can get a lot oout of search engines and stuff like that as well.

Even if i'm going to start a asian site, i will probably choose .com instead of .asia.

Hmm maybe, but then forums would be easily recognized don't you think?

Aren't forums already easily recognizable when you purchase a TLD? I mean, they already get indexed by the search engines, and even if you don't get the required exposure from forums, you'll always have people come in from searching your site or a site in your niche on places like Google and Bing.

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

There already is a domain for forums.
.com stands for community right?

I always believed it stood for company but I could be wrong.

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

A separate TLD for forums / bulletin boards? :cheer:

Quite a good idea that i hv never thought of. :great:

However
in spite of the large variety of TLD always established today, :shake:
those search engines still always prefer
.com, .net, .org

not to mention .forum would be such a hypothetic TLD idea 😉

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

It would be pretty cool considering the availability of forum names, I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon though.

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

It would be cool, but it won't happen for a while.

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

I really don't think its necessary, honestly there are already so many different domains just use one of those.

You're both wrong. Stands for commercial.

Yesssiirrrr, from almost 30 years ago. It's from The Internet Engineering Task Force website, and since I don't have the faintest clue what the living hell that organization is, I'm going to assume it was something important 20/30 years ago, and nobody really cares about it now. Kinda like Netscape.

EDIT: Realized theezy was being sarcastic. Used to be able to spot that a mile away. Alas, I have failed to read the entire post again.

Re: Do you think there should be a TLD for domains?

Just realised my title doesn't even make sense

"Do you think there should be a TLD for domains"
Should be
"Do you think there should be a TLD for forums"

lol

* edit *

There should be a .dan extension, I'd use that for sure.
