Ok hands up how many of you know what "alt" tags are, and why they are relevant to SEO ?
The answer is simple, and "alt" tag tells a search engine what an image is made of, is it a picture of flowers, trains cars etc, it then uses that information to display the picture in the images tab of organic searches.

So why is it important ?
If you images don't have the "alt" tag, then Google, or any search engine is blind, it does not know what it is looking at.
And while we are at it, how many images do you think you have on your site 50, 75, 100 ? what about all those icons and little graphics you made, bet you google is looking at that too, you can bet your life it is.

The bad news is the more images you have without "alt" tags, the more Google is penalising you, so yet another reason why you are not flying up the rankings ?

VB has a plugin which solves this problem for any images you upload, by giving it an "alt" tag, but even that wont tag the icons, gifs and avatars people upload, but they are all searched by Google.

There is a cure though, and it's fairly easy, you need to download a tool that analyses your site for broken links, redirects that don't work, images without alt tags, in fact anything that can damage your sites health as far as SEO is concerned. You get a list of the URLS, decent software should show you all the pages the search bots are seeing, then you identify them one at a time, pasting the bad, broken or links that you don't want Google to see into your robots.txt.

On http://piic.us we use alt tags, the image name is automagically converted into words and used as the title and alt tag. 🙂
