For instance, the list of various forums on Forum Promotion is not on the home page. Which way do you guys prefer? Note, some forums like Digital Point, have a mini-blog on their home page.

Myself, I like a list of forums, or what some might call sub-forums on my home page.

I have an home page 🙂 I made it so that it will get people to like it and say wow factor 😛

And it's all linked to my article page. Come on you can't say you you don't like it http://www.baysidegamers.com/

It looks spectacular. What XenForo plugin is needed to help create such a homepage? By default, XenForo just shows a list of forums.

I don't know regarding XenForo Plugin. But you can always have a WordPress home page that be linked to XenForo.

i would want to make it more appealing for my audience than its children pages

Most communities that are based heavily around a forum don't really need homepages in my experience. For example, I find the FP homepage to be unnecessary.

I think homepages are useful because it can inform the user what the forum is about. I think most forums fail to do that in the forum index and it takes ages for guests to find information about the forum by searching everywhere. Some forums may have obvious niches but for example, someone may have never been on a Promotion Forum and with a good homepage, they should know what the forum has to offer straight away without having to spend ages searching all the posts.

I feel that most users would probably know that before they even see the forum. For example, if a user finds FP via Google, there is a description of the forum on Google. If the user finds FP via an advertisement on another page, there is a description there as well. I can't really think of a situation where someone would find FP in a place that doesn't already have a description. I've never really felt that the FP homepage needed to be there, even back when I was an admin. It's not a huge nuisance, but I feel that it would be better if the homepage were just the forum's index.

My site is custom, and that includes a unique home page. The forums will be a small part of my site in the long run. Not sure if small is the right word. I want to take over the entire industry with my poker site lol

For me, I prefer a homepage with a complete list of functions that includes the sub menu, if there is any. There are sites that is a mix of e-magazine and forum but usually the forum has a separate homepage. When you are on the site's homepage, you click on the icon of the forum and you will be presented with the homepage of the forum that outlines the available boards and other functions like FAQ, etc. This style of menu is comfortable for the user.

I agree with MasterA but if I do a forum on a site, I would do it depends on purposing of each site.
Some sites I can use forums as homepage while I would do a separated homepage with forums to drive visitors from homepage to forums if they need to be supported for which homepage is presenting.
