Well, in class today we have been learning about the civil rights movement in the 60's. My teacher stated many times that we have come so far with the equality of African Americans. However, he says we still have a way to go and with the election of Obama is has been a huge step.

Of course i totally believe this. Racism is still around but i definitely is dwindling down.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think racism will be a problem of the past soon?

Post any comments

Of course racism still excists, there still are and will be sick people in the world, there are probably still some kkk members around to this day, but I think it is slightly decreasing. Also remember not only America has racism, go to any country and there will be for one race or another.

racism is caused by poor education. unfortunately I go to a school with very few African americans. this leads to people thinking that African Americans are different. but if people would talk to other races they would see there is very little difference. and saying there is no difference is a lie tho. Asians eat different foods and interact different than other races. and each race has differences. but it's based on their culture and that's the part people have to accept

racism also works as a crutch in a way for the oppressed race. Lets take a African American for example. While some do make things of there lives and are very successful and live a normal life. However, there is many who blame people of being racists just to cover up their problems. The let it become a crutch to explain to people why they don't do good in school or why they don't try in school. Of course this is not true for everyone.

Yes, racism still exists, however the amount of racists have gone down a lot. I don't think it will ever be fully eradicated either, but a lot of progress is being made.

Well im going to disagree here if your talking about everywhere. I will explain in a moment.

Yes America has gotten a lot better compared to what it used to be like 40-50 years ago, but there will always be racism out there. But with a Black President it shows how far America has come and that it should put down the amount of racism out there. Its actually a very interesting subject, i learnt about it for my GCSE's...well i actually learnt about the political side of America from 1940-1990. Don't ask me why i studied America but the funny thing is i know more about America presidents and past than of my own countries. -n-

Anyway onto sbfc's point. When the US was going through its Civil Rights Movement era we were on a different scale, there was no racism here as such and we all got on fine. But recently (last 9-10 years) a lot of Middle Eastern people have been coming over here, some granted are escaping from war and if return to their country could be killed, but some come here just to leech off our welfare system. This is where a lot of racism is coming back into play, there is an increase in racist attacks, and the two cultures of British and Middle Eastern is split. The Government even fear that the BNP may actually come to power because of all this. I have views on this which i will not indulge but im not the only one to feel this and i feel very strongly on the matter.

Well remember in the old days when people were segregated because of their skin colour? I don't see things ever going back to that level. Yes a small minority of people might be racist towards Middle Eastern people these days, but to the extent they were 100 years ago? No.

And as for people getting attacked, the difference between it now and then is that it's seen, and rightly so, as wrong these days. Back then, people would have had far less of a problem with it. However I'm not defending racists and I think what they are doing is shocking.

Well they weren't here thats for sure, they were in America but not here. Mainly because there was a very very small minority of coloured people here back then. And yes actually, why would more BNP MPs be getting into parliament if people weren't becoming racist again? And we weren't really racist 100 years ago, again because there weren't that many coloured people here. Again are we talking about America here because there were far less attacks here compared to there.

This is what im saying, America has gone forward...we are going back.

that is kinda untrue. And i am going to speak for all of Europe on this one. Well, slavery in the sense of Black's being sold into slavery was not a prominent in that area of the world. However, Portugal was one of the leading exporters of slaves to the united states.

To talk about slaves in general and "racism". The word slave derives for the word Slavic. Which were the main form of slaves in europe. So to say that Europe is not racist is completely untrue. People still hold resentments toward certain races. Were do you think America learned about using slaves. So to say that there is a place that is not racist at all is wrong. Just because it is not racism towards Africans does not mean there is not racism.

Im not talking about all of Europe which has about 50 countries. -roll-

Britain mate, i didnt say they weren't racist. I said about 100 years ago there wasn't as much racism as now in Britain because the Slave Trade Act was passed in 1807 here. And if you re-read my whole argument its about how Britain has become more racist than it was probably 100 years ago. And when i said a small minority of coloured people here i meant compared to America.
