I'm just wondering if the MyBB team is still making improvements.

Do they still update it? My forum currently uses MyBB.

Yes but mainly security updates. They are working on 1.9 but development is slow as it's volunteer based.

Plugins are still updated and released all the time though.

It's still being updated but as forums in general are becoming less popular (and have been on a decline for over a decade), it is harder to get volunteers, funding, etc. The releases are slower and I think there's probably a focus on maintaining stability > pushing out new unique features now.

I think MyBB, and others (xf, vb, ipb, etc) should all pivot to become "Community Software" more in line with modern social media apps than forums. I think they should try to be the custom-software version of Patreon meets Forums meets Facebook Groups meets Streaming, etc.

1.9 has been so long in development by the time it ever (if ever) sees daylight, it's already old news.

Want to stay ahead on something similar to MyBB? Go for SMF, right now 3.0 is in development. I've seen stuff that is definitely worth it!

That's cool, I didn't realize SMF was still alive! I checked them out so many years ago and used them for a site. I liked it but at the time they were a bit behind some of the premium softwares but not far enough ahead to be worth it. It's nice to hear this, lol I love coming back to FP and seeing things like that.

Oh I hope that never happens. I can't stand social media, it's built around quick, point scoring nonsense with people more worried about getting likes than the content they're posting. The reason forums work, and why I will always prefer them, is because they're a slower pace, they're built for long-form communication and not just a race to share the latest popular catchphrases and memes.

Keep forums as forums, leave social media to the toxic cesspool it has created. Apples and oranges, and long may they swim in different waters.

It's too late for me to make the switch. I've already done so much work on my site. I wouldn't want to redesign another theme. I'm happy with what I got for now. I'll keep tweaking MyBB to my needs. I was more just curious if they still had people making a new version, even if progress is very slow.

I don't think it has to be just like social media, but the way that groups work and users interact on social media are clearly winning over the traditional forum format. Maybe there is a way to enhance existing forum software without becoming a social media site, or bringing in toxic users.

As others have said, it's unfortunately slow progress. MyBB offers a great setup out of the box, but also has has its own security issues.

They need to update depending from the money gathered from mybb sales or ads installed on mybb forums. If they do not earn they will not pay developpers from their pocket money.

False. MyBB never had ads installed on other mybb forums. Nor does it have any sales. It's an free open source software.

MyBB 1.8.37 was released November 2023, and is a security & maintenance release.

This version includes improvements for compatibility with mailing configurations and recent PHP versions.
