I would like to get a domain for my forum, http://awesomeaxing.createforum.net/index.php, but I'm not sure if getting a .com (or even a .co.nr) domain would do anything bad. Would the address not change when the user clicks on a different link? Would it stop being hosted by createforum.net?

It shouldn't do anything harmful to your forum. In fact, you'll only get more benefits.

All the links will change if you get your own domain. It's not a bad thing though.

the .co.nr is just a free redirective link. If all you want is a smaller name url to redirect to your forum, that's free and simple

but, if you buy a .com domain, and redirect the NS servers to your forum, then the forum's url, on ALL boards will read as your bought domain name.

just like on my forum.

it reads brawldomain.com in the address url on the entire forum

and, it won't interfere with your old forum url. the link will still bring them to the forum.

I have had 3 total url's , that all still work. Even though i prefer the .com link

I want a .com domain, but can't buy one. its hard being a teenager with protective parents that have credit cards that you can't use.

When people access your free sub domain for your host they will go to the new domain. By getting a .com domain won't mean you are hosted elsewhere. You will still be on your current host.

I would purchase a .com as it is a more popular domain name.
Domains increase traffic and will get your site noticed -😉-

I would recomend .com too but it costs more so I have a .co.uk domain for one of my websites.

I agree coming from the uk -😉-

.info are so chep at the moment 88p!

but thats only for a year though aint it by the time its up the price will have gone up and im from the uk and i find that .co.uk domain names are better for me.

Thanks everyone. But hcfwesker, I don't quite get what you mean. I have the funds for a .com, but I would prefer if it could still recognize board and topic links. So that it wouldn't just read "blahblahblah.com" throughout the entire forum.

ok, instead of using your original forum url, it uses the new domain, and ALSo, will show what page, and section you/'re on, just with the new url.

when you goto advertising section on my forum, it reads this in the url

http://www.brawldomain.com/index.cgi?board=advertising

But, if all you want is a redirecting link, the co.nr/ one is free. But, you can also make the .com a redirecting link, but costs money.

If you just redirect it, it'll read the original url, if that's what you really want?

co.nr is free
co.cc is free
co.uk is free from ovh.com (click your countries flag at the bottom to change it from French).
.com is free from thewebworld.org

I have a fully functional .com domain in mind, but I'm still confused.

If I get a domain that isn't just a redirect, and allows display of boards and topics (like this: "domain.com/board-2" or "domain.com/topic-362"), would my forum stop being hosted by createforum.net? That's what they say.

Well if they say that, i don't think it would be worth taking the chance, unless you move hosts.

Have you checked with your software support forum.

Use "Manual Domain Hosting Set-up" at your title, than ask them if they allow you to manually host your forum through your paid domain name.
