I've been making a few extra dollars lately having sold off a few of my "censored genre" sites, and so I decided to donate $5 to the MyBB project. Upon discussing this with a friend on msn, I was amazing to hear that he personally doesn't see the need to donate to script authors and such.
However that's not to say that I don't support the things I use when I can. Sure, $5 isn't a lot and alone wouldn't even pay to host their homepage (with the bandwidth it uses...). Now that I know it's a tax write off though, they can expect more from me 😛
So, if you created a forum and started earning loads from ads, would you donate back to the people who developed the script (assuming it's free, not paid)?
If I had the money in my Paypal account, I would. There are some really good developers out there that get paid squat. And someone invents a knock off of another script and they get paid. I hate that
Sadly, I dont directly donate to the developers them selves. Ive donated $10-15 to mybbcentral and as you know a Percentage of their donations go to mybb. I really dont see the need to donate to someone who made the script free...if they wanted money they should have made it paid.
I've donated about 96+ straight hours of my time providing support. I rarely got thanked, and often the elite god-like deity "Support Staff" mocked me, the worthless peon.
So I said screw that, and stopped supporting it. Never donated any money, because it would have been a waste.
