Yes I donated $2 to GPTForums yesterday. It is still quite young as forums go and all forums need financial support. Every little helps and I won't miss that amount.
Likewise. I think the last time I donated anything it was to this anime forum. I only gave 20 dollars. No, it was not used for the forum. The guy who used to own it was in financial distress and he was using his forum to panhandle money for support. He lived in Wales over in the UK and US dollars don't really amount to much over there. Me and several members chipped in but it didn't seem to help him very much. He ended up moving in with his grandmother. He and I don't get along very well. So I just quit talking to him seeing as he's very difficult to have any kind of conversation with as he offends very very easily. I've never known someone whose hide was so thin that they couldn't take any kind of criticism or tongue in cheek commentary.

That is the problem when you donate. You have to trust the owner 100% if you're going to give money. The GPT owner @ChrisGrigg has spent a lot of time promoting his site on another forum I belong to (ForumCoin) and although I suppose you can never be completely sure, I feel from his posts that he can be trusted.
That's the problem with anything, the end of the day if that person has problems and life and is going all out asking for donations, not a good idea.
Every website, well every forum does not make money or earn from anything, what they earn goes back to the site/hosting. Even then it's not much they get out of it.
I find it amusing how he was able to take my money and then turn around and treat me like dirt like he usually does. I think if you take someone's money, then you no longer have a right to express having any kind of problem with them unless you pay them back. He had some deep mental and emotional problems and he gave up ownership of his forum to a more experienced person. I pretty much told him I was done being friends and that I was fine being an acquaintance. I think it's worked out for the best seeing as when he owned that forum, he gave out warnings for the dumbest reasons or would gripe if you posted an opinion he didn't like. He was extremely authoritarian. It seems like people who don't have control in their own lives will find ways to express that control over others in an online community.

I don't donate money. I don't like having my real name, account number (even if it's Paypal) out there. I try to help in other ways if possible.
Many factors determine this. If I can see the monies is going back into the community and not into the owners pocket, I will chip in and donate what can be afforded at the time. I wouldn't say I like setting up recurring payments or subscriptions for donations.
