When I started a personal blog, I did not have any revenue stream, therefore, I added a PayPal donation button. I managed to collect some money, which I used to renew my hosting and domain. Have you tried this?

PayPal link on my Twitch got me $5. Not a lot but still nice. I had some people 'subscribe' to me through the site before I got out of my affiliate contract. I didn't make enough for a payout so Amazon just has an extra $30 that should be in my pocket.
Also I prefer calling them "tips" rather than "donations" because donation is a word that's meant to be for NotForProfits / charities.

I don't know that I would call it donations unless I was running a non-profit. I call it "payments" and in return you'd get premium benefits on my forum/blog.
It's tough to get people to donate, unless you have some cult-following among people, lol. If you got that type of following, lol, you could sell stuff also. Anyway, it's tough to find members like that or something that would even sell to people who aren't hardcore fans.

It is tough to sell things online. I've thought about selling stuff on my blog but I haven't done so because I don't think I have enough of a following to make a legitimate go at it. If my blog grows more, I might consider it.
I've been able to successfully get donations. If you develop a community that enjoys being a part of your community, getting donations is usually very easy.
If you develop a large enough community, you could go the Wikipedia route and do a donation drive to help keep ads off the forum.
But it all ends with your community.
