Benjamin was born on January 29 2013 with several birth defects. Underdeveloped nose, ears, and eyes. No outside ear canals and only one open nostril. He has a nasal cleft and colobomas in both eyes which means that his eyes did not finish developing and will have blind spots. His left eye is smaller than the right eye and he will have no usable vision in the left eye. The doctors are hopeful for his right eye but do not know how compromised his vision in his right eye will be. Right now he can not hear but will be fitted with a hearing device at 6 months of age to help amplify sound for him since he has no outside openings for his ears. Reconstructive surgery will be done when he is much older to correct his ears and nasal cleft. Tomorrow they are opening his nostrils to establish a better airway. Benjamin's major birth defect is his heart. He has TAPVR, which basically means his oxygenated blood is being recirculated into his lungs instead of out to his body. This would ordinarily be an emergency surgery to fix but Benjamin also has a small hole in his heart that allows some blood to spill over into the correct side of his heart. Also one of his pulmonary veins goes all the way over to his arm pit and back around to his heart. This will complicate his open heart surgery when it is done. The plan is to let him grow larger before they attempt heart surgery. The doctors would like him to wait until age 6 months if his heart will hold off that long. He was started on a diuretic to keep fluid off of his heart and lungs until his heart surgery.
Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow(2/20/13) at 6:15am, they will be opening up both nostrils and putting stints in both sides. The stints may be removed in one week. He will more than likely be moved to the cardiology ICU after surgery to recover.
(UPDATE: "Surgery went well!!!!!! They just moved..."Surgery went well!!!!!! They just moved him to the icu . Waiting to go in to see him. Still has breathing tube for now but will remove in a few hours. Thank you all for the prayers!!! Will update more later." - Misty)
The internal structures of his ears are normal. He will be able to hear but for now will need assistance with volume until reconstructive surgery can be done to open up his ears. Also he is doing well with breathing on his own so reconstructive surgery on his nose will occur when he is older. His heart we did find out that the vessels are going to be a little more complicated to fix then they originally thought, so he will have to have his surgery done in two steps.
We did find out that both eyes are also abnormal but he is not blind, he can see but will have some blind spots, more than likely up above head and slightly to the sides. But praise God he can see!
All donations will be sent to a separate PayPal account specifically for Benjamin and will be linked to a separate bank account. All donations will go towards the medical bills for Ben.<br /><br />-- February 21st, 2013, 11:10 am --<br /><br />"Going back to a regular room today!" -Misty
