How hard is it for your community to get some support in donations? and what do you rewards them in return then?

What makes your forum good for donations?

Not too hard for my forum, which has raised $2,275 from just donations, which is just over a third of what I've spent in its history, but money has never been a problem anyway.

Donor List

A minimum contribution of $20 is incentivized by a badge, and permissions that match what we grant "Regulars". However unlike what you get by being a Regular, these benefits don't expire.

That's good. makes an different with an higher active rank website.

I have an side widget and this page http://www.baysidegamers.com/clients/donations/ still working on the page and been like that for an year. what do you give back to your members?

Most of it goes towards our Monthly Raffle, where tickets are earned through contributions and can be exchanged between members, but at the end of the month count two cash prices of $25, while the tallies reset. It makes for an interesting and particularly useful economy system.

that's cool good idea doing that

We don't ask for donations.

It was really hard for me. No one donated anything to my forum. I didn't really ask for them a lot, though.

People generally won't donate unless they have an invested interest in your forum. Brand new site better not ask for donations because people don't care at that point. When your site has a good group of people actively posting, and you are in need of money to pay the costs, people are likely to help because they want to keep the community alive where they've been investing quite a bit of time.

new website yeah, isn't an good option but for an 2 year running website and it's hard on myself to get the cash then man!!! it's hard. and some point I have to add it down.

A non-profit website can be quite expensive as far as hosting is concerned, considering the memory usage. A for-profit website is not a good choice for the donation model unless it's a forum where there are no ads.

I don't mind donating to a forum if it's not crammed down my throat. I've been on a few forums where the admin threatened to close the forum on a regular basis if the community as a whole didn't donate on a regular basis. That's a turn off for me and I don't donate anything when things get uncomfortable and I'm made to feel pressured like that.

I don't mind donating, as long the owner uses the money for the website and not his own pure greed. I want to make sure, that I'm contributing to something. I feel like as long as he doesn't keep asking and begging, then I won't mind. I like to donate at sites, that the owner is fully committed too and the site is been open for ages. Never donate to a site that is brand new, then when you donate, they will probably close it straight after and do the whole process again with someone else.

If the person is using a donation in a situation where no ads are running, then it's more like a website fee. The person can ask for whatever he wants in exchange for the pleasure of visiting his/her forum. Of course, that's assuming his/her forum has something people would be willing to pay for.

However, if the person has stated the forum is non-profit, then it can assumed fees are going to pay for hosting etc.. only.

Ok, I understand what you're saying. Most people would use AdBlocker though, so the no ads are kinda pointless.

I don't think new is the case here, I seen an website open and in two months it has donations of around $300 with total of 2,343 members and not even 2500 posts yet

How come it has got that much donations in 2 months? I know it's a popular site but how? 2 months is pretty quick.

They do run an GTA game server, but still I seen an 5 year old website that has over 4 gaming servers and they don't get donations like that.

Keep in mind that the owner used to run another website that was running for 6 years till it got suspended by it's host.

It's more impressive to me that they got 2,343 members in just 2 months.

Oh OK, understandable as it's a game server.

@Tucker933 Do you think some of those members were fake considering how many members they got in that time?

I did mention that the owner used to run another 6 years old website that got shut down and most of the members on the site now are from his other old website..
