Did you ever encounter a situation where someone who acted like your friend on a forum double crossed you? For instance, maybe they pretended to be your friend and became a member of your forum and then opened up a competing or copy site that took drained your forum traffic or started offering similar freelance services that took away business.

I don't see what being your friend has to do with this. Anyone on the forum could copy you.

That's the point... it's not really a 'double crossing' unless the person acts like your friend. Otherwise it's just like any other copycat website stealing your traffic.

Yes, I once trusted a 'friend' with my website and it turned out badly.

What I mean is, Why would someone act like your friend just to copy you? Anyone could do that, and it would be better to not get to know the owner so they don't know who copied them...

Yeah, it has happened to me before...

If you see someone succeed in one way, it's only natural to want to do the same thing in order to succeed yourself.

That's just one example, there are many ways a 'friend' could double cross or under cut you online or in some way do something that is not in your best interest. Another example might be if a really good friend of yours who happens to be on your forum starts scamming others on forum. That could cause you to lose members. I'm sure there are other examples. In those situations, I'm sure you would question whether or not the person was really ever your friend or just pretending to be your friend to gain some advantage.

I think the problem is not being very discerning about who you label friend then anything. The label friend should not be something you hand out easily as that prevents this problem in the first place. I am careful about who I consider friend and never had a problem with friends turning on me.

I can't say that I have. I have seen it happen to other people, but I am kind-of a stickler when it comes to the people that I trust.

Yes, I know someone that just opened a site (early Jan I believe) that was exactly the same as the non-niche my forum used to be. The only differences between mine and her's were the members, name, and layout. Otherwise, she was using the same software, categories, and practically everything...of course changing the names to fit her domain name but theoretically everything was the same.

It is still open and I am losing forum traffic due to it. Though I have changed my niche since then but I'm still losing visitors/traffic due to her forum.

I have messaged her and let her know but she doesn't seem to understand. *sigh* Some "friends"/people are just complete a-holes.
