Hello 🙂

Been a while since my last visit. Lost your link for a while and took me ages to find it again, then by chance through another website that affiliated with you I found you.

Anyway, the middle of last year we upgraded from IPB 2.3.6 to 3.0-3.1. The features are really good for the 3.1 series but there were some factors about the skins and modifications that were disappointing.

The arcade in 3.1 was just basic compared to what we were used to in the 2x series. The skins although some were nice they weren't a patch on our old skins. Also the skins had to be upgraded for every upgrade which are now regular with the 3.1 series. A biggie that I found which was disappointing was the modification side of it. The hook system is fabulous and many of the old modifications hadn't been upgraded and ones that were released mostly seemed to be paid for mods. I would say about 75% are paid for now. Everything was getting expensive and finding it difficult to keep up.

I had a chat with the staff on my forum to see how they felt about reverting/downgrading back to IPB 2.3.6. It wasn't going to be easy because it meant I had to restart the board all over again from scratch but it did mean we could have a lot of the old modifications and 10 or so skins we had for that board. Gladly the staff were on my side and said they would support me what ever I decided to do. I put a notice on the forum and didn't get any complaints from the topic. Many members wished us good luck.

So around the 25th January 2011 I installed the 2.3.6. It's only been a few weeks but am glad I have done this now.

Has anybody reverted back on a version software?

No I haven't for various reasons. I find the social integration with v3 and how easier it is as both a registered member, or a member of staff is well worth maintaining the installation. What kind of modification were you trying to achieve with your community that made the cost relatively unbearable? While I've used 2.x IP.Arcade, I can't say I've used a compatible solution for 3.x so I can't really comment on that. Glad it went well for you though.

HI Rich 🙂

Basic modifications that were free for the 2.x series were paid for in the 3.x series. I know that coders had to put a lot of work into creating new mods for the 3.x series and the coding had to start from scratch so can understand the charges but it was just too much for me. With the arcade side of things I enjoy the IPBCodings Enhanced arcade but this is only for the 2.x series and imo the best arcade out there.

I've never downgraded on versions. When a new version comes out, and if we know it's not very stable yet, we usually wait till a more stable version comes out. We do things on a case-by-case bases. No sense in rushing these things. And also it depends on the severity of the problem as well. Usually we just try to hang tough until the problem is fixed before doing anything.

Never downgraded due to a risk of the Version "running out of date" and hackers finding the cons of the codes etc... Then you wouldn't get support or a patch for it cause its out of date. And if you would you would maybe have to pay some one to code it. Upgrading is the way to go tbf.

Also with the newer mods come newer features and even better!

I never thought of hackers. But that's actually a very good point. If you upgrade rather than downgrade, you'll have a better chance of being protected, which will mean more security as well.

Why did you have to reset though? How did the members feel about this?

Explained in my first post. 🙂 I think the members much prefer this version now than the newer one we had. Also the version we are using now is still stable for now.

I think as long as it is still stable and the security is still good then you shouldn't have too many problems. However, if it ever comes down to the wire you should upgrade eventually. But as you don't seem to be having any issues, then you should be okay.

Absolutely and hopefully that won't be for a long time. Fingers crossed...

I wouldn't be that confident, though. Because you never know, one of these days a release could come out that have major fixes compared to the last release, and the software provider may recommend that you update to the latest version ASAP. So while I'm sure you're good to go in the short term, I wouldn't exactly be that confident in the long run either.
