Science has been along for thousands of years and it has seen both ups and downs, but also a lot of change. Specially in the nineteenth and twentieth century, a lot of controversial science has been done. And this article chain, called “Retro science” will cover some of these crazy experiments, which eventually brought forth amazing new insights.
The first person to be covered by us will be Dr. Vladimir Demikhov, an Russian doctor who was active in the mid twentieth century, during the cold war and is still known as the father of organ transplant.
Stalin, wanting to see advancements in medicine greater then those of the west, set up a series of top secret USSR medical laboratories. Here the scientists that were assigned to them were encouraged to look beyond the conventional way and experiment more freely, mainly in the direction of prolonging human life.
And this is exactly what happened, organs were removed from corpses and hooked up to modern life support machines, dogs were put to death and brought back minutes later. There even was a case were a severed dog head was kept in life with a primitive heart-lung machine.
