I keep hearing this from members on my board who want the drama I recently silenced, "Drama Sells". I think there is a difference between an intelligent debate over a disagreement and people calling each other "fuckjar" and posting endless google image search results of meme insults.

In response people have noted that shows like Jerry Springer and who's the father shows dominate TV at times because of their popularity. My thoughts are that drama might bring post count up for a short term but if you want long term content and quality members you have to work for that and drama fighting and cliches will only deter any visitor who browses your board.

They say sex sells also but I'm not running a porn site either.

I've been to a few others boards on this site and of course I do not see drama going on. What are your thoughts on forums run with the basic idea of being virtual Jerry Springer shows? Is it something you would want to experiment with? Do you think people want that? What kind of people want that type of forum?

Drama works great for blogs, clickbait and such. I get a lot of readers from online drama and opinions, so I guess it does sell if you market it well 😀

I guess it depends on your niche. If you're running a debate forum I think it's natural for people of different opinions to banter back and forth but it's not wrong for you to want them to back up their opinions with facts not just vulgar insults.

I know that there are a few forums out there whose main theme or niche is drama, whether they intended it to be that way or it just sort of evolved into that is another story. It works pretty well for them, but if it's a forum like this one it doesn't work out so well because people don't want to hear/see drama.

It all depends on the type of forum you want to run. Some communities enjoy drama, and some are horrified by it. It doesn't really have to do with the niche, because a webmaster forum, for example, could either love or hate drama. It has to do with the types of members make up its member base. As an admin, you can shape your community to go in one of the two possible directions, although you don't have total control over where it goes. Once a community has gotten used to certain things, ir is very difficult to cause it to change.

Unfortunately I ended up with some very unsavory drama. I should have anticipated that when letting users posts about my forum on a forum that allows racism and general hate and bashing that pushes the limits of harassment.

I am working on building up my debate and discussion sections though. I think those sections will be much better for "drama" that without being trashy. I think some conflict is good, no one should agree on everything or what would there be to talk about.

-- 12 Apr 2015, 16:17 --

Yes, I have a small group on my board that does not want to move on since I silenced the drama. I do believe they will find a new forum soon and for the time being I'm just riding out the storm.

Although my community is generally pretty civil, some of the most active days have been a result of controversial opinions or childish banter.

There's not much that we can do about it. Micromanaging won't work. People have every right to use a forum as they wish.

I don't mind some drama. It can be fun. But not to the point where feelings are hurt and people want to leave the site.

I think there is a difference between debates and drama. Sometimes people just say things just to get people riled up (which is an asinine way to be when socializing with other people). However, I enjoy holding conversations with people and when they disagree with me that they are able to back up their opinion with reason.

I think the same way. There is something to be said about how you voice your opinions. Showing a lack of respect -- regardless of what you think -- will make you less credible and keep people away from considering your viewpoint.

I honestly would prefer forums with some kind of drama rather than a boring old forum, it's no fun when you're on a forum that just posts around. You need some kind of entertainment, the "class clowns" if you will. So I do agree that drama sells, many people like watching and even contributing to the drama. 😛

However there is a difference between an "intellectual debate" and an "debate." Most debates turn into drama, whereas some debates turn into a debate that have people countering peoples opinions with facts, which in my opinion tend to be the most boring. 😛 I agree drama sells.

I agree. Drama is what keeps most people around...obviously. But too much can be annoying and can become a problem.
