The design doesn't really impress me as you probably should have at least another color than just the one/two you have now. Even though it is an original design with actual other things than just the forum its self

But The Concept is very original and that is a very good thing.

Yeah I also think that the design of his forum needs an improvement, to me it kinda looks just a bit to plain and old.

Love the theme! 🙂
Don't think something needs to be added or changed

The top tabs are kind of small and I think it makes it difficult to navigate through the website. I do like the background and the news feed though, they match very well, but I'd have to agree with PirateAlphas. You should add maybe 1 or 2 more colors, I think maybe more reds or silvers would fit the theme.

Design Quality
[note]========== BEGIN - Design Quality ==========[/note]
Overall, your design is good, and clearly relates to your forum's genre. However, there are several things which I suggest that you change in the design.

1. Softer Gradients. On the index page, and some other pages, the table gradient is too harsh. That makes the forum look a bit old fashioned, and not as pleasant on the eyes as it would with a softer gradient.

2. Add more Padding to the Guest Box. This is one of the first things guests will see, so is pretty important. Here is an example which shows how the icon you have on the guest box is too close to the side.

Also, I recommend adding more spacing between the letters. Something like the CSS rule line-height:1.5em. Finally, the guest box's title is too brightly colored compared to the other colors on the forum. Maybe make it a fairly light shade of gray?

3. Three-Dimensionality. I recommend adding some shadow to the categories on the index, to make it look like they are floating in space, rather than resting on a space-patterned wallpaper, as they appear to be now.

Overall, your design is good, though. 🙂

It's good to see that each of your sections is pulling its own weight, overall. You need to have more content, although that's also true for most forums. Overall, you seem to be doing pretty well when it comes to statistics. Particularly for a forum as young as yours.

Site Structure
[note]========== BEGIN - Site Structure ==========[/note]
I think it's a bit odd to have your homepage be a content page rather than the forum index. Since there is only one link to the index, and it's a small one, it makes your forums harder to get to, and some people may never get past the homepage, as it isn't too clear that your website is a forum. Also, from what I understand, your website is a fansite, correct? I recommend making this more clear.

In terms of your forum's structure, I think it needs work. I think you can merge the news zone and game zone together into one, much larger, category with a few new sections. I think you should also re-order your meta category (community zone) to follow forum conventions a bit more, just so forum users will better understand what they're looking at. By that, I mean have the announcements as the first section, then a feedback section, and then introductions.

Here's my suggestion for what your index should look like, as I think it's a bit simpler to simply propose an alternative than a bunch of specific suggestions:

[Deadnought Zone]
- Deadnought Game News
- Dreadnought Discussion
- Deadnought Videos <-- Rename "Media" to "Videos," as it's more specific.

[Community Zone]
- The Bridge
- Staging Area <--- Maybe come up with a new name for this?
- Officer's Mess

I also recommend adding a new section under your Dreadnought category. Maybe a forum for speculation on what the game will be like, or ideas? Not sure. You are more familiar with the genre than I am.

Poor

Final Remarks
This is a good forum which has a lot of potential. I recommend improving the structure, and focusing on both adding content and improving the design a little bit. Structure is most important, though, in my opinion. Good luck!

Hi. Thanks for reviewing my site. I'll just clarify a couple of points. 🙂

The style is an old style from an old software version, but it is one I am comfortable with. I am actively looking for a new style to use which will be a little bit more modern but that has been secondary to putting together a feature rich and active community. WIP.

Thanks for the suggestion ref image in guest box. New eyes see things these old eyes do not.

You must have viewed the forum as I was playing around with colours. The title matches the rest of the site. Someone said that it may be difficult to read. I find the opposite. Something really bright on black is too much of a contrast so I put it back as it was.

Your 3D suggestion is beyond my ability. I'm not a graphics artist or a coder.

Stats.... Hmmm. I shall reject your criticism. This is a one month old forum for a game that has not yet been released. I see loads of forums which have huge numbers of off topic posts. I don't want that. This is a niche focused community. At time of writing there are 1100+ posts 880+ of these are ON TOPIC. That's excellent for keeping things focused and also helps with SEO. 80% of the posts are on-topic posts. I'd say that is an extreme positive - especially for an unreleased game(!)

The root of the site is intended to be a news display only page. No fluff. I don't want things to be too busy and distract users from the content. I'll maybe make some changes to the navbar to make the links more clear - but that might come with a fresh style.

As for the structure. Sorry, yeah, that is a WIP too. I have other forums set-up they're just not visible yet.

Here is a sneak preview:

Renaming media to videos would be a bad call as there is more than just videos in that forum, yet not enough content for the game yet to split out into pictures and videos. I'd rather have a full sub-forum than two empty ones 😉

Final point: I always put forum announcements at or near the bottom. People are here for the topic, not for the forum. The forum should be a medium for allowing communication, not an entity in it's own right.

Thanks for your review. I will make a couple of changes you suggested. But in the main I disagree with your feedback. (we'd not be human if we all agreed on everything!)

You need to have more sub-forums to post in. The design doesn't impress either. Apart from that, nice work! 🙂

No, I don't need to have more subforums to post in, not yet at least. When we have more information about the subject there'll be more forums. I don't want it filling up with mindless off topic drivel. General Discussion, this ain't! 😉

From my look around, I see you don't have a light theme alternative. I know personally, I will not post on forums that do not have a light theme, for various reasons.

Good luck. 🙂
