An alternative to incarceration for narcotics consumption are drug courts such as the ones instituted in North Carolina 10 years ago. Convicting an individual for drug addiction can cost the state $20,000 or more. Conviction and non-incarceration of a suspect cost the state $2,000.

Yeah, I'm sure putting kids into straight inc like clinics will help them. After all, child abuse, rape, kidnapping, and suicide were just minor side effects of the wonderful program.

Actually, I don't have any links about drug courts. I read about them in an old newspaper published in 1998 and thought the idea would be worth talking about.

I'm not entirely sure I understand this. So, if you get caught using/selling drugs, you just get slapped with a fine?

I'm not an expert in the area, but I'm pretty sure the drug courts are limited to drug addicts or small time drug dealers who are caught with a small amount and claim to be using/abusing the substance (drugs in this instance).

In MA up to 1 oz. gets you a $100 fine and your weed taken away, unless you're under 18 in which case you then must serve a youth drug awareness program or pay $1k.

We got it better than most states :cheer:

Oh alright, I get it now.

lol I misread the post at first and thought you meant the drug rehab programs like straight inc we had in the states for marijuana "addicts". 😛

I see your point. In a civilized society the punishment must fit the crime.
