Is the DVD going obsolete? I am posting this thread because I had noticed that new tv models have no more slot for the DVD. What I see now is a USB socket which, admittedly, is more convenient than the DVD. However, the DVD is a good storage medium especially with the videos. We use the DVD for archiving personal videos particularly videos of occasions. And when we have house guests, all we do is to insert the DVD into the tv slot and presto, we have a show. Anyway, that's the pacing of digital technology - people are being left behind.
The DVD was invented in 1995, as a mass storage device and honestly it's not the best for long term storage. In the past, we had a lot of DVDs and CD-roms and all those got scratched up when my daughter was a toddler and would find them and play DVD stacking games. 😀
I love the USB storage devices/flash drives more, even for movie/music/document storage. You can store much more on a USB device than ever on a DVD. I think the USB was invented in 1994, similar time to the DVD, though not sure when/who first sold the flash drives. There is one down side, being a more limited number of erases/reuse over the DVD (again not sure how many times you can rewrite on a DVD/DVD-rom etc though I'm assuming unlimited).
Now with all that DVD bashing, I am still a Netflix DVD subscriber, though honestly we almost never watch DVDs. I should really cancel that. 😀
I don't think it's really going obsolete, even though technology is advancing by leaps and bounds. There are still people who own VHS and haven't upgraded yet, so I wouldn't really say the DVD format is getting anywhere close to being obsolete.
Most new computers don't even have optical drives because disc's are so uncommon these days. As Internet connections have gotten faster and cheaper, I don't see much of a reason to support them anymore, even with game consoles.
DVD taken over Videos then soon Videos was stopped. Then Blue-ray came and till this day DVD are still selling higher then blue-ray.
As time goes on things are changing that now we all can go online and watch live feed or the lasted movies/TV on amazon, Netflix and sky. So people are now saying why buy DVD version that takes up space and just get an subscription from one of the steaming movie/TV networks
Honestly I would say DVDs are pretty much near being obsolete, Blue rays are even getting there. We've got Ultra 4K discs now and on top of that most people prefer to stream movies. I've got a few dvds and blu-ray discs of movies that my spouse got when they were younger. I do have a few newer movies on Blu-ray as well, since they're movies that I absolutely love. Most films I'll just stream nowdays.
I have not bought a DVD or blu-ray in years. I have no plan to anymore. My dad used to always get movies for Christmas but then we just stopped after he just never watched the ones we bought him. Think he needs a new DVD/blu-ray player.
I guess I keep getting them because I'm afraid I won't have a certain movie available when I want to watch it. I developed this mindset from back when my parents had DISH or Cable and certain things weren't always airing. So it was good to have the cassette whenever I felt like watching it.
With the proliferation of the SD card, DVDs are getting obsolete. I can't remember the last time I personally bought a DVD. I think this is one of the things that advance technology has chased out of circulation.
