I think it depends on your motivations if you are more motivated to just write a few unique posts, casually promote it on a few forums, social bookmarking sites, blogs, and social networks sites on the weekend instead of writing and promoting like it's your full time job.
Squidoo.com, hubpages, eHow, YouTube Adsense partnership, Blogspot Adsense Partner, Triond, BlipTV, eBay, Craigslist, Associated Content, Freelance writing for bigger blogs like EnGadget, Gizmodo, TechCrunch, and Gawker, doing simple web designs for companies, can be an easier way to make money online for people who just want to produce massive amount of Unique post then starting your own blog, or forum from the beginning for making money with Ads.
I find it pretty hard getting a large audience, traffic, and word of mouth traffic to my websites compared to Squidoo where I just posted 24 average articles where I make a few dollars a month depending on how much traffic I get from the Squidoo community, direct traffic, Google Search, Yahoo, Bing, and refferal traffic.
I have websites where I make very little, or close to nothing a month, but have more then 24 posts, but less traffic since I don't have the community which Squidoo.com have.
However, if you are motivated in building a site, you may make more, but it is very tough in most cases since you need to build a community to read your articles, buy your products, and occasionally click on your ads. But, you might earn more in the long run if your website gets enough traffic.
I also like using 3rd party sites to get traffic to my own websites instead of just relying on Search and direct traffic since it is good to have a mixture of traffic sources.
