We upgraded our host in the past 5 months and our traffic and membership has skyrocketed.

A "GIF" image shouldn't lag it, I'd just blame the server for sure then if you're just using a free service like forumotion.

I'm using a Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of memory, Windows XP.
Of course this is just my work computer, I have a much more powerful machine at home.
I work in IT, so I'm very sufficient at maintaining the computer's performance.

I just tested your site via Chrome vs Firefox.

Chrome's lag isn't as noticeable whereas it is on Firefox. It seems noticeable on Internet Explorer as well. With Firefox & IE being majority browsers used, I believe you need to find a way to optimize your site towards other browsers instead of just Chrome.
