Do you have a time limit on how long a post/thread can be edited? If so, how long is it? Or can users not edit their posts at all?

I have it set up on my forum that posts and threads are always open to be edited, there is no time limit. I have an "edit reason" box available that most members use too. I have an edit reason plugin installed also that lets you compare, revert, and check what was edited and when in the ACP. This is useful for handling any "my words against yours" discrepancies, this way I can just check to see if they added to their post or edited something out.

I don't see any reason to do that. Once your post is quoted, it stays permanently within the post that followed it.

My reason for not limiting post edits is due to the simple fact that humans make mistakes, so it's never too late to readjust their posts -- be it spelling- or grammar-related, or even to fix the formatting.

I never have had any problems with people editing posts soon after they had posted, because not many people I have dealt with wanted to cause issues with doing "my word against yours".

I let users edit and delete their own posts/threads with no restrictions
No need for it, really
They can only soft-delete stuff so staff can still see what they deleted and restore it if need be

Users with less than 50 posts can only edit for the first hour, this is because we've had issues with spammers returning later to add links to their posts. But after that there's no restrictions on editing posts. 🙂

I suppose edit posts may become a problem for troublemakers. They may made spam or rude posts and when we come to them they will deny the fact and have edited their post. This is why I really like vBulletin's post history feature for moderators. No matter how many edits have been done to the post, with one click moderators can see the original content, making it easier for investigation. The other possible method to tackle this is by documenting the original post as soon as possible, copy-paste it somewhere, or take a screenshot.

So no, I don't think there is a need to limit someone's editing time. Because most times members need it for other need than troublemakers use it to bring trouble.

I only allow editing on software where you can see the post/topic editing history. XenForo is a great example that allows you to see this as a moderator or administrator.

I never really liked these much. 😛 They seem to do more harm than good, most of the time.

I hate it if I make a mistake and realise it can't be edited 😛 Sometimes you can't edit the title and I know its bad to make a mistake in the title but I sometimes do and the the whole post is ruined 😛

This is smart, I like it. 🙂

Yeah, I've always left posts open to be edited whenever. It helps if you have a plugin that allows you to compare previous edits, especially if you have a marketplace or something like it.

I don't on my forum and I don't like to set one because a lot of the time when you want to change something you are unable to which is frustrating at times.

I honestly never got why we have time edit limits. 😛 If I needed to change something, maybe edit the post to update someone on something, or even fix a typo you see a few hours later. 😛 I think restricting someone to edit their own post, (and even offering it as a premium feature) is really restricting how members interact. If you have a marketplace thread and can no longer edit it, it seems pretty silly. 😛

I always have deletes set to 5 minutes in case they have double posted; and edited generally an hour. But sometimes I will increase the editing time in different forums.

I'm pretty sure I don't..I hate when there is a limit on it. I've been in this situation on another forum and I needed to fix some typos and there was like a 1 hours limit before you could edit.

There is a limit on editing posts to reduce spam and such. It's not really a huge issue for members, though. If they want to have a posted item which can be edited as much as they like, they can post the content into a blog post. I think the posts get locked after a few hours or so. 😛
