So just been wondering, I have not seen a lot of schooling & education related forums being advertised on FP. Thinking about it this could be a rather profitable niche. Offering a premium tutoring service would be a great way to make some extra money if qualified individuals could be found. Anyhow to avoid rambling just wondering about how successful a general education board could be.

I think running an education board, especially that involves tutoring would be a huge undertaking that would be far too much work for most people. You would have to have a very broad and strong knowledge base whilst be good at explaining different methods. You would need a strong staff team that all have that same broad knowledge and time on their hands. IF you could pull it off I feel it would be great, but it would be much, much harder than running a normal forum.

Yes, seems to me this would require hiring people, possibly certified teachers to help out with, which makes it something that most people wouldn't be able to pull off. That and you split your audience up to only 1 region as education varies greatly between countries, and even areas in a country have vastly different education systems.

True that and how many teachers are going to work for free? The main question is would the turnover for the paid tutoring cover the costs of hiring the tutors or would it be better if the pupils were to spend an extra couple of hours at school after their lessons are over.

Now thinking about it the best way to get this possible would be for a school's chapter of the NHS to run a tutor website or partake in one, as NHS members tutor for free and you'd usually think are pretty qualified, although that would then most likely be limited to students from a single school.

Although thinking about it something like this could possibly be put on a college transcript, yet still unlikely.

A general education board which caters to many people (Such as a board orientated purely for students) I can see being quite successful if you managed to get the word out and offer something different. In the UK for example you have a huge player in this field in the forum of a student forum/website which is nationally known and has links with pretty much every uni/college over here.

As for a premium tutoring thing, I could see it being partially successful dependant upon where you live. I don't know about the UK but in the US I could see it if I am honest. As mentioned, getting people would be your problem I suppose. I myself, am currently undertaking a qualification which will allow me to teach adults in Colleges (In the UK) and If I am honest I wouldn't be adverse to such volunteer work as any practice is good practice. I suppose it would be just a case of finding people like myself looking for experience.

/end ramble

As haze says, a general discussion board would work, I believe I saw one a while back, at least I got an e-mail being offered to work on one which happens a lot so I will have to go through my inbox if you want the link?

There are a few around, I even ran one myself for a while but I had to end it due to time constraints but it did gather a fair few posts and stuff. It is more just being able to offer something different. TSR (The UK's biggest student forum) has alot of stuff to offer. It's own built-in Wiki sort of thing, many areas where experts offer help and stuff and of course as previously said, links with various universities. It is purely differentiating yourself.
