Ok, so I'm on a Forumotion based forum but having issues with spammers who go by the name of Tayne & Oliver. Anybody know effective methods to prevent them in their steps?

I haven't operated a Forumotion ran forum for almost a year now, but I think the way to go is to probably go in the ACP, go to the Members tab, type in the member's names (if that's even available) and hit delete accounts. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Not useful at all as it doesn't remove their post =/

Try removing their posts and then removing the accounts? Otherwise, I don't know what else to do. Sorry. Like I say, I haven't run a Forumotion forum for quite sometime, so I forget what their ACP is like. All I know is it's basic, unlike some hosting sites. Sorry if I wasn't much help. I was trying to...

Well I woke up to 204 spam posts one morning full of boobs, mudkipz & people chopping up their body parts. Me and my staff had to censor them all.

Ban their IP addresses, at some point they'll get bored.

I'm also seriously starting to think that Rok may have been right >.>

They seem to use unlimited proxies.. Well I just think it's sad that they have nothing better to do than spam us.

Google search "Proxy IP lists" and you'll get a lot of results then just ban the IPs there. No guarantee it'll get rid of the spam.

Best way to do it is one of these ways:

Enable email validation, disable email reuse, ban as many free temporary email domains as possible. This means that they have to activate all their accounts and if they use temporary emails then it will annoy them quicker if they have to find new ones and set up more temp emails.

The best way is as follows although it will affect real members to-
Force admin validation. For each account that signs up, google their registration IP and see if it shows up as a proxy or on sites like stopforumspam.com. It is does show up as a proxy, don't activate the account. If their IP shows only a handful of results and none highlight that it is a proxy or a spam ip then activate the account. If they get through ban that IP address.

phpBB3 does have a feature where users first x number of posts need to be approved before they show. I don't think forumotion have that feature but if they do, enable that. This does highlight a reason why free hosts aren't that good in situations like this.

Forumotion is notorious for spammers. Get used to it.🙂

But to answer your question, just simply ban their accounts and their IP addresses. If they re-register, then ban them again. If they re-re-register, then take it to the next level by contacting the support board.

There's really nothing you can 'add' to your forum besides anti-spam mods, so simply banning them can do the trick.

This works. Did it on my old forum when we kept getting spam bots, never saw one again.

New proxies appear all the time and anyway there will not be a list with every proxy IP on it.

Use any anti spam method you can find, also raise the time between posts

Thanks for the advice everyone. The main problem is that they aren't bots.. they're real people. However, I'll probably add some proxy ips to the banned list.

Did you read this part of the post?
Make sure you've got Email activation turned on and keep banning the Email accounts they use to register. Doing this will force the spammer to create a new Email account every time they want to create a new account on your forum - this will frustrate them sooner or later. Also if you notice them sign up from spam Email sites like [email protected] just put a wildcard ban on @spam.la (*@spam.la)...stopping anyone registering an Email from that site.

Sooner or later they'll run out of free Email spam sites to use. At the end of the day it comes down to whoever has the most patience. 😉

Ok, I've banned two of the emails that have the endings of:
@Entertainment.co.cc
@tyldd.com

So does that mean when they try to register with emails using those endings, they won't be able to do?

That's correct. Which in turn, means that every time you do that for spam Email sites they'll be forced to look for a new one.

Be careful though, as you don't want to block the popular sites like Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo.

Don't worry, I won't be blocking big sites like Hotmail. Well yeah, they're gonna have to register for a new email each time which'll be annoying. Thanks for your help MHW.
