Elite Status

How often do you give out elite status? Once people earn Elite, do they keep it for the life of the forum or do you eventually remove them? What perks do you often give the 'elite'?

I don't have this on my forum. We only have a VIP type thing that is purchased in points (forum currency) or real money. For people that do; what constitues Elite status on your forum? Interesting concept if you have a lot of long time/"senior" members.

When I have given out elite it's for the duration of their stay. I will often have two options where the member can purchase elite status, or by contributing they can gain access.

I don't really care for Elite or VIP. I guess the status means that member is favored and recognized by staff?

Honestly, I don't have an elite status for my members. I think it's a good idea for a forum to do stuff like that for their members if the site's been open for a long period of time and the user who would receive it has been an active contributor.
